Because I have to kill some time, I thought about making an all 'Why You Should Watch Gossip Girl' considering the second season is going to start on Monday. Moreover I was inspired by the one [info]syxstring made recently.^^

The Show

Welcome to New York's Upper East side where the wealthy and connected mingle at benefits and try to deal with their always dramatic love lives, not to mention picking colleges. Blair Waldorf is the so-called toast of adolescence in her world; she and her friends, Kati Farkas and Isabel Coates, go to a prep school and fancy parties with their rich parents. Blair is envied by her adversaries because she is thought to have the perfect life, not just because of her gorgeous boyfriend, Nate Archibald, but because she's also planning on getting into her dream college,Yale. With everyone worried about college(or procrastinating on worrying, which everyone seems to be doing), and senior year dragging along, her seemingly perfect life is interrupted by her ex-best friend, the beautiful Serena van der Woodsen, coming back into town after getting kicked out of boarding school. Serena comes back into her life, and into the eyes of Blair's boy friend. When everything Blair knows starts to fall apart, everyone will realize that her life is far from perfect. Will life in the the Upper East Side redeem itself of what it's really supposed to be? Or will the false facade reveal that the rich have the same problems as the not so rich (Jenny and Dan Humphrey), if not more. And just maybe Jenny and Dan are all the more happy with their simple, not so expectant lives. SOURCE

Characters

Serena van der Woodsen

Former It girl of the Upper East Side and best friend of Blair Waldorf. Recently returned from a Connecticut boarding school for reasons unknown to her friends, as was her departure from Manhattan a year prior to the show's beginning. Serena van der Woodsen comes across as down-to-earth for someone from the UES, but things, relationships (Dan, Nate) and opportunities (fashion shoots) seemed to be handed to her on a silver platter.

Blair Waldorf

Queen Bee of the social scene; a position she inherited from her best friend after Serena left New York. An only child, she is the daughter of a soon-to-be-divorced fashion designer mother and a gay father and is the longtime girlfriend of Nate Archibald although she became involved with Nate's best friend Chuck Bass in episode 107.

Dan Humphrey

A loner, he is the son of a rock musician turned art gallery owner, Rufus Humphrey, and the elder brother of Jenny Humphrey. Smitten with Serena, he finds himself immersed in her moon-eyed world where he is made to attend St. Jude at his father's bidding.

Nate (Nathaniel) Archibald

Torn between Serena and Blair – both of whom he has romantic histories with, the so-called golden boy also frequently finds himself making life decisions based on the whims of his controlling father, Howie "The Captain" Archibald. Friends with Chuck Bass that gets him in a lot of trouble and has had a fling with Vanessa Abrams.

Jenny Humphrey

A freshman at Constance Billiard with a desire to carve her own place in the in-crowd, Jenny is impressionable and quickly becomes the pawn of several characters. She also has a tight-knit relationship with her brother, Dan, which proves handy as she finds herself in frequent need of help.

Chuck Bass

Cynical and world-weary, Chuck has no qualms about living life on the edge and possesses near-sociopathic tendencies of abusing and manipulating others who get in his way. The childhood best friend of Nate, his reputation as a patron of baser habits make them complete opposites. Portrayed firstly as the 'bad boy' of the group, we start to see a different side of Chuck in the succeeding episodes.

Vanessa Abrams

The childhood best friend of Dan Humphrey. She comes back from Vermont to move in with her big sister, just as Dan is trying to make things work out with Serena. She is in love with Dan, but when she sees he is in love with Serena, she backs off.

Lily van der Woodsen

The multiple-divorced, ex-ballerina, and socialite mother of Serena and Eric van der Woodsen, Lillian has a history as a former groupie of Dan and Jenny's father, Rufus, that she would rather not acknowledge. She is currently married to Bart Bass.

Rufus Humphrey

A former rock star whose marriage has fallen apart, he is also an owner of a fledging art gallery. Determined to give his children a quality education, he's enrolled them at private day schools which lead him to bump heads more than once with his former flame, Lillian van der Woodsen. He got a divorce from his wife, Alison Humphrey who was having an affair with a guy named Alex.

Filming locations

Gossip Girl is filmed entirely in New York City with scenes being shot in and around the boroughs of Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan. Described by producer Amy Kaufman as "a character in the story," the city is featured prominently even when most interior scenes are filmed at Silvercup Studios in Queens, including loft and apartment sets that were based on actual New York residences. For example, the buildings of Packer Collegiate Institute and the Russian Orthodox Synod of Bishops were combined to create a set resembling the exterior façade of the latter institute for the socialites' fictitious schools -- the Constance Billard and St. Jude's School for Boys. The chapel of Packer (located in Brooklyn Heights) is being featured as a gathering place for the teens. A set was also built to resemble The New York Palace Hotel on Madison Avenue where Serena and Chuck reside. Local haunts are also used as stand-ins for the characters' meeting places such as Communitea in Long Island City, The Front Room art gallery in Williamsburg and to a more exclusive extent, the Henri Bendel boutique in Fifth Avenue. Some of the filming locations are also historical places such as the Metropolitan Museum.
