Oh, lots. I'm a huge fan of one-hit wonders. Especially disco and 80s one-hit wonders--Quiet Riot, the Weather Girls, Golden Earring. In fact, I like a hell of a lot of them. I've got Vh1's "Top 100 One-Hit Wonders" list practically memorized. (#1, for those of you wondering, was the stupid Macarena. That's the one one-hit wonder I really hate.)
But my favorites are definitely the disco/dance, hair-metal, and 1960s garage-band ones. My favorites in each era:
1) 1960s: Sugar Sugar (the Archies); California Sun (the Rivieras); Dirty Water (the Standells); Louie Louie (the Kingsmen); My Boyfriend's Back (the Angels); The Hippy Hippy Shake (the Swingin' Blue Jeans); Wild Thing (the Troggs); In the year 2525 (Zager and Evans); In-a-Gadda-da-Vida (Iron Butterfly); Hitchin' a Ride (Vanity Fair)
2) 1970s: Woodstock (Matthew's Southern Comfort); One Toke Over the Line (Brewer and Shipley); I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing (Hillside Singers--yes, the one from that old Coke commercial, in its original form); Bang a Gong (Get it On) (T-Rex, although I love all their other songs); Kung Fu Fighting (Carl Douglas); the Hustle; Turn the Beat Around (Vicki Sue Robinson); More More More (the Andrea True Connection); Play that Funky Music (Wild Cherry); Werewolves of London (Warren Zevon); Got to Be Real (Cheryl Lynn); Ring My Bell (Anita Ward); Video Killed the Radio Star (the Buggles)
3) 1980s: Funkytown (Lipps Inc); Whip It (Devo); Turning Japanese (the Vapors); Genius of Love (the Tom Tom Club); Tainted Love (Soft Cell); Valley Girl (Frank Zappa--yes, it was his only charting hit, although all his other songs are totally awesome); Mickey (Toni Basil); Come on Eileen (Dexy's Midnight Runners); She Blinded Me with Science (Thomas Dolby); The Warrior (Scandal); The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades (Timbuk 3); Safety Dance (Men without Hats); Keep Your Hands to Yourself (the Georgia Satellites); Touch of Grey (the Grateful Dead--yes, this was their only really successful charting hit)
4) 1990s: Groove is in the Heart (Deee-Lite); Silent Lucidity (Queensryche); Baby Got Back (Sir Mix-a-Lot--oi, stfu); No Rain (Blind Melon); Peaches (the Presidents of the United States of America); Tubthumping (Chumbawumba); Mambo no. 5 (Lou Bega)
5) 2000s, although I suppose these don't technically count yet: All The Things She Said (tATu); 1985 (Bowling for Soup) |
