Kites in India symbolize freedom -- the kite flying free over the land. In America, fireworks celebrate freedom as well -- freedom won in the revolutionary war. Both commemorate wartime. Kites in India are actually quite interesting. There are several different types of kites flown, but the largest variety is the fighter kite. I had to laugh when I saw this question, because I knew that most people would automatically say "India has the peaceful kite, while the US has the nasty warlike explosive firework". Looking through the answers, I was exactly right. But this is patently untrue. Kites commemorate wartime in India. They were used to measure distances historically. By triangulating, you would know exactly how far your enemy was so that you could drop artillery on them. Not very peaceful I'm afraid. Today the fighter kite is the traditional Indian kite, where the challengers attempt to cut the string of their opponent. Sounds like fun actually. Almost as fun as setting off fireworks used to be before they were outlawed in America as being too dangerous. I wish that people could understand that we need to be responsible for our own actions, not protected from ourselves as they were truly a lot of fun. It's truly a shame that my children will never knew the fun of setting off fireworks on Independence day like I did. Another interesting fact is that both the Indian kite and the American firework originated in China. |
