Philadelphia's Libraries need your help!

Please help stop the closing of 11 branches of Philadelphia's Free Libraries by calling the City Council members listed below on Monday, December 22nd and by passing this information on to your Philadelphia friends and reposting this information on your own blog.  This is extremely important and we need your help. Mayor Nutter is seeking money to open 2 NEW libraries, but not keep open 11 ...

35 Years, Something to be proud of

Giovanni's Room recently celebrated it's 35th anniversary - no small feat for a small independent bookstore.  Here's an interesting little article in the Philadelphia Inquirer about the store and its anniversary.  www.philly.com/inquirer/local/20081006_Phila__gay_bookstore_Giovanni_s_Room_marks_35_years.html The anniversary event was pretty neat.  It was nice to put faces with the names...

Banned Book Week

Thanks to Feministe I found out that this week is Banned Books week.  www.feministe.us/blog/archives/2008/09/29/happy-banned-book-week-2 I'm pleased to know that this week coincides with my birthday, as I love books and many of the books I love are on these lists.  Censorship is such an interesting topic.  Through my old job working at a small, independent, LGBT/feminist bookstore, I learned from...

Powerful open letter to Sarah Palin

Wow, I hadn't realized all of the other things that are at stake with the Pro Choice - Anti Choice struggle besides simply the right to choose whether or not to have a child.  This letter was eye opening for me.  It's pretty scary to think about. Reposted from AlterNet.org http://www.alternet.org/reproductivejustice/97457/an_open_letter_to_gov._sarah_palin_on_women%27s_rights/ An Open Letter to...

Please ask your member of Congress to co-sponsor the Gulf Coast Civic Works Act

Three years after Hurricane Katrina , there's finally a bill in Congress that will give Katrina survivors a fair chance to rebuild their lives. But it won't become law if enough representatives don't stand up to support it. The Gulf Coast Civic Works Act would hire 100,000 Gulf Coast residents and evacuees, providing them with training and jobs to rebuild their homes and communities. It started...

Ordinary Radicals

Here is a documentary I want to see: Part of it focuses on Shane Claiborne and the community he is a part of in North Philadelphia called the Simple Way.  He wrote a book that deeply affected me called "The Irresistible Revolution: Living as an Ordinary Radical" that talks about the radical teachings of Jesus and how different they are than mainstream America would have us believe.  I highly recommend...
