Birthday's Bring Our Family Together

Life is busy. I'm applying for jobs, juggling multiple projects (if only a few of them paid!), trying to squeeze some writing in, dealing with car repairs, and trying to keep from falling too far behind on housework. (I'm very bad at meeting that last goal. Do you think this might have anything to do with the fact that it's the last thing on my list?) On top of that, today was my youngest stepson's...

The Inauguration...

...has finally happened. For much of Bush's presidency I didn't think it would. From very early on in our last president's first term, or at least, following 9/11, I was convinced that he would find some way to halt the ordered transition of power, up to and including declaring martial law. Even after the election, I waited, hopeful, but still nervous. That Bush had the grace, finally, to let the will...

An Editor's Take on Deep POV

Today's edittorrent post, Jennifer is right... deep POV and "head words" , discusses putting the emphasis on a POV character's realization of a feeling or thought. As I'm one of those writers who often edits out the "extra" words, I found edittorrent 's take on this interesting, since whichever editor wrote today's post doesn't feel it's necessary to avoid the thought process information, agreeing...

Public Service Announcement About Products Made with Peanut Butter

According to this NPR story , products made with peanut butter may be contaminated with salmonella, as may peanut butter sold in bulk. US Secretary for Arts and Culture

Via shuttergal : Quincy says Interesting - it had never even occurred to me! A US Secretary for Arts and Culture? Please consider signing this petition: Quincy Jones has started a petition to ask President-Elect Obama to appoint a Secretary of the Arts. While many other countries have had Ministers of Art or Culture for centuries, The United States has never created such a position. We...

Good and Evil

Via truepenny : If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart? --Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyn The Gulag Archipelago...

Photographs and Memories

All that rumaging around with photographs, however frustrated my search might have been, meant a chance to revive a few memories. (And, in some cases, to look blankly at pictures with me in them and wonder why I couldn't remember the event.) If you want more information about the images, just click; they're fully annotated in my gallery. Btw--my new icon is based on my son's art. He emailed me the...

Searching for That Which is Lost

I've just spent a couple of hours searching for a photograph--not online, but in my own collection of photographs. You see, I'm working on a graphic image for a website I'm building for our local science fiction convention. After consultation with the con comm, we decided we wanted an image that incorporated elements of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. (This was based on a couple of sample images...
