The Naked City table of contents

According to Ellen Datlow , the contents for The Naked City: New Tales of Urban Fantasy -- in which my story "The Way Station" will be appearing -- are just about finalized. "Curses" by Jim Butcher "How the Pooka Came To New York City" by Delia Sherman "On the Slide" by Richard Bowes "The Duke of Riverside" by Ellen Kushner "Oblivion by Calvin Klein" by Christopher Fowler "Picking up the...

Lovecraft Unbound publication date

Lovecraft Unbound , edited by Ellen Datlow and published by M Press , will be seeing daylight in October of this year. Along with "The Crevasse," the Antarctic-set horror story written by Dale Bailey and me, you'll find plenty more good stuff. I have to say I'm pretty excited to read this one myself, because there are some great, under-represented names on this list, including Brian Evenson and Michael...

A little Mailer for your morning

"Good writing is not an act to excite tolerance because it is good, but anguish because it is not better. Who can swear there has not been something catastrophic to America in the failure of her novelists? Maybe we are the last liberators in the land, and if we continue to thrive on much less than our best, then the being of us all may be deadened before we are done" Also: "It is this necessity...

S.J. Tucker, and Ravens in the Library

As some of you out there may already know, indie folk singer S.J. Tucker   ( sooj )  recently had a medical misadventure and is now saddled with staggering medical bills. My friend Phil Brucato ( satyrblade ) and Sandra Buskirk are editing a benefit anthology to help her get them under control. It's called Ravens in the Library , and is available here . As far as I'm aware, it's entirely...

I am still here

I haven't disappeared. At least, not from real life. I have no home internet connection now, which means I'm doing all my communicating and emailing at coffee shops or other people's homes. I expect this to be rectified within the week. Also, work on the novel has begun in earnest. It's a little scary, and a lot exciting. I promise not to post any godforsaken word count meters, though. Nor will I oppress...

"The Crevasse" sold, and some thoughts on rate of production

I just received word that "The Crevasse," a short story I collaborated on with Dale Bailey, sold to Ellen Datlow's forthcoming anthology of stories inspired by Lovecraft. This was my first effort at collaboration. The process was a bit tentative at first. Both Dale and I have pretty strong ideas about what we want a story to do -- not to mention healthy egos. But after some minor wrangling, some concessions...

Running

A few weeks ago, I lost my mind. It happened so quickly that it took me some time to register the fact that anything had happened. And by then, of course, it was too late. At the beginning of the school year, Mia signed up for Girls on the Run, a program for third through fifth grade girls. They spend a few months running in preparation for a marathon in December, and it's meant to foster health...

"The Way Station" sold

I just received word from Ellen Datlow that she's taking "The Way Station" for her urban fantasy anthology, Naked City , due out sometime in 2010. Now, back to the grindstone; no rest for the destitute!

Mathiessen, "Shadow Country," and rewrites

Peter Mathiessen's Shadow Country has been nominated for the National Book Award this year, a fact which has set some followers of literary politics aquiver with indignation. Because you see, Shadow Country is not exactly a new book; rather, it;'s a thorough reworking of three novels published throughout the course of the nineties: Killing Mister Watson , Lost Man's River , and Bone by Bone ...

Gay marriage and Proposition 8

Here's Keith Olbermann on gay marriage and Proposition 8. Listen to him. I know this is getting posted everywhere on LJ, but not everyone who reads this little blog reads all those others, so this is for them.
