The Barge Explained

Welcome to the Barge. Please Make yourself at home.

What is the Barge? The Barge is a massive ship that traverses between time, space, and dimension. It draws into it new passengers all the time, usually for reasons that are rarely completely explained to anyone. Your best bet? If you're an Inmate, it is likely that the Powers that Be in your own world decided you could use a little rehabilitation. But you're dead? Isn't it a little late for that? Not necessarily. Look at this as a golden opportunity. Your time spent here and the lessons you will learn are your ticket to getting a second chance at life. The catch? You don't really have a choice between taking this opportunity or passing it up. If you're here, you're here for the whole show, and you're not leaving until whatever power placed you here decides you're ready to be sent back. If you're a Warden, you know why you're here because unlike the Inmates, you actually had a choice. The most common scenario involves you wanting something that only a higher power can provide -- whether it's the return of a deceased loved one, an impossible reunion, a second lease on life, or maybe you just really wanted to help people that needed helping -- whatever your bag, that's what got you your job.

What's on the Barge? So far, excluding the main deck, there are 5 massive levels to the Barge, but talk of the Old Timers and the Lifers is that depending upon how many people are aboard, the Barge can get bigger or smaller. On each level there are dormitories for both Inmates and Wardens.
-On Level 1, you've also got the galley and the dining hall. Everyone takes meals together, unless you're sick for some reason.
-On Level 2, you'll find the medical ward, fully stocked and with friendly faceless crewmembers to see to your every need.
-Somewhere on Level 3, there is a secret door, leading to a swimming pool and spa. Unfortunately, you'll find that you are unable to form the words to reveal its secret location if you do find it -- which would do you no good if you could say so, anyway, since it moves. You'll only be able to find it, as an Inmate, if you've done well on your visits to the Ports. Wardens will almost always have an instinct for where it is. Kudos to you if you manage to hunt it down!
-On Level 5, you'll discover an immense library, stuffed with books from various times and places, and all seem to translate themselves for you.
-Most Ports of Call and other phenomena are announced by the Admiral over intercom. Everyone will have the vague sense that they recognize the voice they hear, but will never be certain where they remember it from. The Admiral's Cabin, though rumored to exist, has never been found, nor has the Admiral ever been seen face to face.

Do Strange Things Happen on the Barge? All the time.
-Flooding - Usually, most strangeness happens off the Barge when it stops somewhere, but every now and again, the Barge will pass so close to a world without landing that some of its essence will seep onto the ship, its effects lasting usually from 1 to 3 days. The onset of such phenomena is usually preceded by a sudden but swiftly ending quake. The Admiral will often make an announcement to confirm such happenings.
-Freebies - Sometimes, the Barge just throws you a bone. The first freebie anyone receives, naturally, is that their cabin is stuffed with things from their previous life -- things that they love, or sometimes, the cabin itself becomes an old room of theirs. Other freebies are announced by Mod Post.

What Are Inmates, in a Nutshell? Inmates are villains. Yes, you heard me. Any baddie from any book, movie, TV show or comic book that you could ever imagine has the potential to wind up here, provided they haven't resolved and reformed on their own. Usually, the barge snaps them up when they die, or right before they were to die. This way, nobody really winds up missing them. So every supervillain, evil genius, and malcontent in every known universe has the potential to wind up here. They come with a severe reduction of their normal powers (if they have any -- Lex Luthor, for instance, probably wouldn't suffer many changes), and are tied to a Warden to look after them. Some become what are called Lifers -- Inmates who will simply never leave the Barge because they cannot learn or refuse to learn. Some learn what they're supposed to and return to normal life. Others, still, decide they are of more use on the Barge, and stay on as Wardens, themselves.

What are Wardens, in a Nutshell? Wardens are the keepers of the Inmates. Each may come from any time or place or universe, just like the Inmates. In fact, it is very rare that an Inmate will be paired with a Warden from their own universe. These people are granted the full use of their powers if they possess any (with only the limitations that they may not do harm to another Warden or an Inmate not deferred to their care), and are given further resources with which to better know and handle their charges, usually passed down by the Admiral. Each Warden posesses one tool which points them in the right direction while in Port and also warns them of danger. It can also give them hints as to how to deal with their Inmate at a given time. These will usually take a form that is most accessible to each individual Warden, so almost none will be similar. Wardens, unlike Inmates, have the option to leave when they feel they have done all they can. This can mean that once they have reformed a number of Inmates, even if it is just one, they may choose to leave. Others are known to simply give up on an incurable Inmate, and leave them alone.

How do Journals Work? Like the Items that are exclusive to Wardens, each Journal is unique, but there is one given to everyone. Those born in an age before computers will likely have plain pen and paper journals, but they will be surprised to find that other Inmates and Wardens can read what they write, if not marked properly, and comment on them. This is an integral means of communication on the Barge, as it is felt that everyone should have some contact with people they are not simply required to work with. All Journals are small enough to carry on one's person, even when in Port, and are impossible to lose or break. People native to the Ports, if they see a character writing or typing in one, will merely perceive them bending to some mundane task that is familiar to them.

Explain Ports, in a Nutshell? Every Port of Call is an optional scenario. If an Inmate and Warden choose to leave (only inmates with wardens may go offship), they will step into whatever world that scenario creates. They might even be returning to the world an Inmate or Warden once inhabited in life. There, they must blend in, do as the Warden's Item asks they do, and stay alive. Note that some Ports are more dangerous than others. Usually, tasks laid down will have specifically to do with the further growth of the Inmate. However, there are times when the Port calls specifically for the Warden, and it may be the Inmate helping that person learn their own lesson. It is imperitive that Warden and Inmate work together at all times, since the survival of one will likely depend upon the other. Woe be it to any uncooperative fool, for instance, that steps off the Barge in Silent Hill.
-Separation -- Now and again, due to unforseen circumstances, a Warden and Inmate will be split apart. Sometimes, an Inmate will leave to a Port without being accompanied by their Warden, or they will be initially separated upon stepping off. If the Warden does not have orders for them, the Inmate will unknowingly assimilate into the world they've stepped into, forgetting their previous life and knowledge of the Barge. It is then up to the Warden to find them and bring them back. The Inmate will have no memory of the incident. Sometimes, the opposite happens, and it is the Inmate who must find the Warden. (Note that all seperations must be approved by a mod.)
