Chapter One.
Chapter Summary: Gwen meets the Doctor in person and Jack finds out exactly what happened to Ianto.
Jack was apprehensive as he and the other man entered the hub. Gwen could tell… She always could tell.
She gave Jack half a smile and looked at the man flanking him.
"How is he?" Jack asked and then seemed to remember his manners. "Oh… ahh, Gwen. This is the doctor. Doctor… Gwen.
The Doctor? "As in the Doctor?" Her eyes were wide. "Your doctor?" She pointed to Jack. She couldn't quite believe she was meeting him in the flesh. "Yes, yes… we met on the link up."
"Pleased to meet you, finally." The Doctor said, taking Gwen’s hand.
Gwen stared into the doctor's eyes… The TV link didn't do you justice, Gwen thought and couldn't help but smile. She could totally see… feel… umm… understand, Jack's… interest.
The Doctor's eyes drifted over her shoulder as he watched Jack make his way deeper into the fortress.
When Gwen went to follow, the Doctor grabbed her lightly on the shoulder. "How is Ianto… really?"
Gwen sighed and opened her mouth to speak when something occurred to her. "Doctor… Forgive me for saying so, but…" She cocked her head slightly. "This… this isn't you type of… well…" She fumbled for the right word. "There's no espionage or aliens involved here. So why---,"
"Jack called me," the doctor interrupted. "That's all I need in order to be here."
Gwen's tension eased slightly and she grinned. "Good. That's good." She nodded approvingly.

Jack stopped at the closed door to his quarters. He'd insisted that they brought Ianto here, after Ianto refused point blank, to go to hospital.
At first Ianto had said he'd just been mugged, but the black eyes and the broken ribs begged to differ. He'd been beaten up… badly.
It took Jack nearly twelve hours to figure out what had really happened and he'd only investigated because it was so obviously clear that Ianto was not being honest.
Jack wondered if Ianto was embarrassed, or if he thought that Jack would think less of him if he knew some thug had gotten the better of him.
Jack couldn't understand Ianto’s behavior, this wasn't like him. He was obviously hiding something. His injuries and his story, simply did not match. Which is what led him to question Ianto completely and check his jacket pockets.

Twenty Four Hours Earlier. Ianto was sitting up in the bed, back against the headboard when Jack walked into the room.
"Good… You're awake." Ianto's bruised and swollen face, gave cause to make his tone gentler than he wanted to be.
"Sir?" Ianto said, his eyes never quite catching Jack's.
Jack had Ianto's wallet in his hand. He waved it in the air as he took two steps into the room. "You said you were mugged." He couldn't keep the accusation out of his voice. You lied to me. "Muggers usually take…" He waved the leather in his hand again. "… little things like wallets. What the hell really happened, Ianto?"
Ianto turned away and groaned when he moved too quickly. "It's nothing, Jack." He moved slower as he slid back down into the bed and faced away from Jack. "Just leave it, okay?"
Okay… Jack was slowly creeping up on the anxiety scale. Ianto would never not answer a direct question. Ianto would never turn away. Ianto would never…
Jack moved to sit at the end of the bed and he felt Ianto bring his knees up and recoil. "Ianto?"
"Go away, Jack, please… Just… just go away."
Jack slid up the bed. He was officially worried. "I'm not going anywhere until you tell me what this is all about." He reached out to touch Ianto's face.
"Don't." Ianto raised his hand as if to defend himself.
Okay… Forget worried or anxious. He was officially panicked. He wanted to sweep this man up into his arms and hold him. He wanted to yell at him for getting hurt. He wanted to…
"What happened, Ianto? I'm ordering you to tell me the truth." Jack kept his face neutral.
Ianto wrapped his arms around himself and began to rock. His eyes finally meeting Jack's in a silent plea. Don't make me tell you.
Jack's mind raced. What the fuck? The man cringing and hiding in the bed was not the man Jack knew. "Ianto, what? Did something get to you?"

Ianto moaned as his ribs protested, but he couldn't help the belly laugh that curled up inside of him. Did something get to me? He laughed again. He heaved in a deep breath as the laughter started to mingle with tears, and he could hear his own high pitched squeal as the hysteria took over. "No… No, Jack. Something, didn't get to me," he half laughed, half sobbed.
Jack's face was full of concern and laced with confusion and Ianto couldn't blame him. He knew he must have looked mad in Jack's eyes.
"Please, Ianto." Jacks voice was soft now.
There was a split second where Ianto saw through the hysteria and reached for Jack. He grabbed at Jack's shirt and Jack came willingly, wrapping strong, protective arms around him.
After a while their breathing steadied and synchronized. Jack didn't say anything, just held on to him with equal intensity. He was grateful for that, because really… what was he going to say? Ah yeah… Sorry about that, but I kinda got myself raped by these three big dudes and they beat me up and then took turns all over again and… and I'm kinda fucked up in the head at the moment and…
Jack kissed the top of his head as they slowly breathed and rocked as one. "I'm here, Ianto. I got ya."
"What?" The question spilled from Ianto's lips before he could pull it back. He moved out of his embrace. "Here? You're here?" Ianto half squealed.
It was like he was outside himself. He could see, feel, hear, himself moving and talking, but he couldn't stop it. "Well where the fuck were you when they did this to me!" It was a rhetorical question. He knew exactly where Jack was, but sudden anger flared in his stomach and he couldn't help that it was all directed at Jack.
"When who did what to you, Ianto?" Jacks voice was frustrated, but quiet.
"Where were you when they put fence wire around my dick and took turns at fisting me?" he started to scream. "Where were you when they stuck their cocks up me and laughed because I'd wet myself. Where were you when they were kicking shit out of me and calling me a fagot? Where were…"
Ianto stopped his tirade when he was finally able to focus on Jack's face. He was pale and his eyes glistened with tears.
"Oh… God…" Ianto really didn't blame him. "Jack I… I didn't mean…" He tried to sit up again in the bed.
Jack had stood and moved backwards towards the door. He didn't say anything, he just backed up with a look of utter disbelief on his face.
Ianto closed his eyes as the tears started to well again and he heard the door open and then close a second later.

Present day. Jack knocked lightly on the door, but Ianto didn't answer so he opened it slowly.
Ianto was sound asleep. His head facing away, so Jack moved to stand at the foot of the bed.
The bruising had faded slightly and he didn't look as swollen. The deep, tight lines in his brow were gone, replaced with a look of… peace?
He'd been able to trace Ianto's activities and had done so as soon as his head stopped reeling. You weren't there and they raped me. You weren't there and they raped me.
"I don't know exactly what happened," Jack spoke softly. "And I'm sorry I left the way I did, but I'm promising you this… I'm not going to let anyone else hurt you, okay? Not now… not ever."
He moved to kneel beside the bed. "I promise, Ianto. I promise."
To be continued…
AN: Okay… Still worried I'm not quite getting their voices, but all your encouragement with chapter one has really spurred me on. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!
