I just finished reading "The Greeter" by Mary Ellen Cooper.
/>In a nutshell: The book takes place in Cumberland Woods, Georgia. The main place of action is, of course, Wal-Mart which in the book is referred to as "The Store". There is a series of "main" characters but right off the bat you know the book is mainly about Miss Mary (The Greeter) and Jazz (The Cart-pusher, real name Jesabe).
The book's back cover gives reference to Miss Mary adding detective to her "duties" and solving a mystery. That I think is misleading. What the book is about is a small southern town and it's tight-knit community. There is a graduation, sickness, church going, and of course the Wal-Mart. Miss Mary is the greeter and of course knows everyone. Jazz is one of the kids she has helped and still holds a relationship with as friend and "grandmother". I enjoyed the banter created by the interaction of the characters. It reminded me of my dad and uncle who seems to know most people and what is going on or can at least find out with ease. Jazz's character is interesting because of his "crush" on the jewelry counter person (the girl he goes to school with) causing his musings and shy behavior to be amusing. The so called mystery really is not presented as such so when the outcome is presented it was more of an "oh" than an "ah ha" kind of thing. Overall a good read. Sometimes the character backgrounds are more interesting than the story but still worth reading.
I give it a B-. I would recommend it as a light read with no expectations when a break from the usual is needed. Read it with cold iced tea for the most southern experience. |
