According to PhoCusWright’s Travel Agency Landscape 2006-2009 report, the traditional travel agency segment (excluding online travel agencies) remains significant, compelling and deserving of careful study and consideration.
PhoCusWright says that the U.S. travel agents sales represented a 41% of the total market place, including online travel agencies in 2006, 37% in 2007 and projects that agency sales will represent 33% of total market by 2009.
According to PhoCusWright the typical leisure agency today focuses more on complex travel, where commissions are still high and more experience and expertise is needed to facilitate the consumer’s purchasing decision.  But it also says that changes in the travel market has created new opportunities for new travel agency models, such as home-based agents, cruise-only agents and agents focused on adventure, family or honeymoons and weddings.
