There is certainly a lot to like about Brad Pitt's new movie The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons. It's a beautiful film to look at, for one. The cinematography, direction, and special effects are outstanding. And the story - about a man who ages backwards - is compelling on several levels. I found myself still thinking about different scenes days after I saw it, and that's always the sign of a good movie. You'll probably want to talk about afterwards. I found it interesting to discuss with people my own age, and then people my parents age. It's one of those movies that speaks to people in different ways. So yes, I recommend it...but I didn't love it. It's awfully long, for one. But unlike, say, "Titanic" - where by the time you start getting antsy with the love story the boat starts sinking and then you're mesmerized - I thought Benjamin Buttons got a little tedious midway through. And the movie didn't stir me emotionally like it probably should have. It was thought provoking, sure. But I didn't feel emotionally connected to any of the characters. It's one of those movies that I'm glad I saw. It will probably be nominated for some Academy Awards, and it may even deserve to win a few. But on the other hand, I don't feel the need - or the desire for that matter - to see it again, at least at the theater anyway. Maybe I'll like it more on DVD when I can pause it for a bathroom break and a snack.
