"For a transitory enchanted moment man must have held his breath in the presence of this continent, compelled into an aesthetic contemplation he neither understood nor desired, face to face for the last time in history with something commensurate to his capacity for wonder." - Unknown.
Many years ago, explorers from the east, known as the Old World in these times, came to the compelling and bountiful New one. It is a land of danger and beauty alike, vast and unexplored, a new frontier to humble man, and make him grow stronger. It was on the coast they founded the luxurious city of Rivelata - "revealed" - and severed all ties with the world of yore.
What they found in the New World's lush jungles is something beyond the reaches of even the most fantastical imaginations of their time - just off the coast of the mainland there is a chain of small islands, barely a mile or two around each, and upon the largest there is a strange craggy cave. Within its depths, there is a large glowing, pulsating garnet crystal, taller than two men stacked, thicker than five around.
Immaculada, a young girl just shy of thirteen years old at the time who had gone on an expedition with her father to explore the continent further, was the first to see and touch this crystal. She called it the Garnet of Journeys.
It is said that when she had discovered it, God had looked down on this New World, and chose her to be its ambassador. It burned her hands and took her mortality, but after that day, people began to come to Rivelata, people not from any other world they had ever heard of - but others. These lost souls, taken from their homes, were very confused. As she had been the one to awaken the crystal, it was she who spoke with them - the first wave of people that populated the city made her the Queen. The original immigrants questioned the action, some wondered if she had some measure of control over these people's minds, but none would speak publicly against one with such a power.
That was one-hundred years ago. |
