SUMMARY: Jaejoong was a free-spirited young chef who believed happiness was always at armslength until a terrible accident changed his positive outlook drastically. =//=//=//=//=//=//=//=//=//=//=//=//=//=//=//=//=
CHAPTER ONE - Wake Up Call Although it's been months since the accident, JaeJoong is still haunted by the ghost of his past. During cold, lonely nights like this one, he could remember everything that happened down to the last detail. As he curls himself into a ball, sweating and panting, he recalls the happenings of his tormented past, taking in sweet and bitter memories altogether....
@-@ Lying comfortably on the couch while intently reading a book, JaeJoong heard someone calling his name, the voice he could recognize among the crowds, "JaeJoong-ah! Where are you? Are you in here?!?!?" "Yes, I'm here in the living room, what do you want?" Jaejoong answered. "Where the hell have you been?! I've been looking, everywhere for you!!!" Heechul who just came in spat back irritably. "If you looked everywhere then you would've found me. I've been here all day. Why what's up?" Not straying his eyes away from the book. "Stop acting like a smartass! Don't you know my legs were cramping while I stood at the rooftop of the IMU building waiting for you for three and a half hours! I didn't even have my fucking lunch yet!!" Heechul yelled furiously. He looked at his watch and saw its short hand lingering on top of the number three. "Oh! Holy shit! Was that today!?!?!?" Realizing his mistake, he clasped the book shut as he stood up hurriedly as if trying to catch up with the forgotten appointment. "I forgot! Was it really today?! Crap! I'm sorry, I came home late last night since I was the one assigned to close the restaurant. I was so tired and it's my day off anyway so i thought i could just stay home and rest. I completely forgot! I'm so sorry!" "Why are you always like this!?" Not accepting Jaejoong's explanation. "Not showing up and always making excuses! I'm busy at work too but I still show up on dates. And how can you forget? I reminded you before you left yesterday! Do you even remember what day it is today?!" Jaejoong's eyes widened at the sudden realization, as his guilt grew even more. "It's your birthday! I'm really sorry! I promise to make it up to you! Uhhh.... Ahhh! Tonight! I'll make it up to you tonight! I'll make you your favorite dinner. I'm really sorry," pleading with his hands pressed together. "You know what, I'm sick of this shit. This is just so repetitive." Heechul, arms crossed, still firm as a rock on not letting the issue slide. Jaejoong pouted his way behind Heechul, resting his chin on the other man's right shoulder and locking his arms around the small waist. "Mianhae... I'll make it up to you. Promise." Heechul, resisting giving in, tried untangling the interlaced, porcelain fingers in front of him but it was firmly locked in place. "If you seriously think an apology is acceptable then what's the use for cops?!?" "Chullie," Jaejoong whispered as he kissed his neck gently, putting the enranged man's imperviousness to the test. "How do you want me to compensate for this stupid mistake of mine?" Kissing his way up to Heechul's ear, leaving traces of saliva on the other man's neck. "Aish! How can you be so irresistible! So unfair!" Admitting defeat in the hands of his lover, as he turned around and kissed Jaejoong back vigorously. @-@ Streaks of tears rolled down his face while he laid helplessly on his bed, wetting his pillow. He clutched the comforter against his chest, as if trying to relieve the agonizing pain gathered underneath it. "M-m-mian-hae... Hee-ch-chul... Mian-hae," he whispered through his heaving sobs as he slowly drifted to sleep. The next day, Jaejoong was awakened by a combination of doorbells and loud thumping on his apartment door. He walked unsteadily towards the door, massaging his eyes with the heel of his palm. With a click, he opened the door and saw a man look at him. "Hi, hyung. Goodness, hyung, you look messed up." "Good morning to you too, Chun," as he let his bestfriend enter his messy apartment. "Wow," looking around the room, "ever heard of cleaning up?" "Just shut it. It's too early in the morning." Jaejoong retorted. "What are you doing here so early anyways?" "Well," Yoochun started, "remember A Taste of Milan? The Italian restaurant by the school?" "Uh.. Yeah.. What about it?" "They're changing the management and staff and, now, they're looking for a new head chef." Yoochun smiled. "I'm not ready to work yet." Jaejoong refused, again, "Besides French Cuisine is my specialty not Italian." "But hyung," Yoochun trying to change Jaejoong's mind, "you've been locked in this apartment for who knows how long! You know you better start working soon or else you'll starve! You'll eventually run out of savings!" Yoochun shocked Jaejoong and himself by the sudden outburst. "I- I just don't think I could do it yet." Jaejoong said in soft voice as tears started to fill his eyes. "Sorry, hyung. It's just that it's too hard for me to see you like this. It's hard for us, me and Junsu, seeing you suffer when we know how you were back then, full of life and happy. We know it hurts, we were hurt too but you can't be like this forever. You'll have to move on somehow, the only difference is when you do it." Yoochuun said comfortingly. Jaejoong already sobbing at the truthness of Yoochun's words. He knew he has to do it and not let his emotions take over. Yoochun hugged Jaejoong close, letting his hyung cry in his arms. "Don't worry, hyung. Me and Junsu already work there so at least you don't have to be alone." "Th-thank y-you, Chun, for the b-both of you. You did't have to do that." Jaejoong whispered. "It's nothing, hyung. You know you can always count on us." ~*~ The next day, Jaejoong was picked up by Junsu and Yoochun for his interview. Apparently, the couple had already submitted an application with Jaejoong's resume leaving the older one no choice whatsoever. Yoochun drove while Junsu sat beside him on the passenger seat. "Hyung, is it okay back there?" Junsu concernly asked after observing his hyung's countenance. "Well, not really. Especially when being dragged off against my will." Jaejoong with arms crossed answered bluntly. "Hyung," Yoochun started, "you know that this is for your own good." "Yeah, yeah, I know," Jaejoong defeatedly said, although rolling his eyes like a teenager being scolded. "So are you really ready to do this?" Junsu asked with a smile as he turned to look at Jaejoong over his left shoulder. "Would Yoochun drive me back to my apartment if I said no?" Jaejoong asked rhetorically. "Hmmm... Good point." Turning back his gaze to the road ahead, nodding, while massaging Yoochun's hand on his lap. In just a few more minutes, they reached the restaurant. "Ah, we're here!" Yoochun exclaimed. "Well, I could see that." Jaejoong eyeing in the scripted letters, A Taste of Milan, on the brick of the building, causing Yoochun to shake his head due to his hyung's fiestiness. They stepped inside and were greeted by the two hosts. "Good morning and welcome to A Taste of Milan." They said in unison. "Would you like a table for three?" The buffer one asked, whose nametag spelled the name KangIn. "Uh no. We're actually here for an interview." Yoochun answered. "Hmm.." Checking a leather-bound notebook, "What's the name sir?" "Kim Jaejoong. It's for the head chef position." "Teuk, can you show them the way to Mr. Kang's office?" Kangin whispered to the thin one named LeeTeuk. "Oh, okay." He nodded to Kangin. "Right this way," as he lead the way. The host turned left onto hallway as the three followed behind. It opened to a dimly lit room with candlelights illuminating each table. Jaejoong noticed how fancy the place was and realized that it seems to be an expensive place that can't easily be afforded as he observed in awe. They went through another hallway with glass overlooking a landscaped garden with some wooden-roofed tables on their left and the kitchen wall on their right. At the end of the hall, LeeTeuk stopped in front of a wooden, mahogany door and knocked. "Come in," a voice inside the room echoed. The host opened the door and peeked his head through, "Sir, there's someone in for an interview." "Okay, let him in." Junsu mouthed good luck with his thumbs up while Yoochun pushed him inside with a smile. "Uh... Good morning, Sir. My name is Kim Jaejoong," as he heard the door shut behind him. Wish me luck, he thought.
