Blame blogofstench --she's the one who inspired me to start trolling YouTube for videos from my past.
Anybody else remember Voice of the Beehive's Monsters and Angels? A song I shouldn't have liked...but...Tracey's creepy babydoll face dress thingy is fabulous...and, the song is fun to sing. If I ever find myself in a karaoke situation that actually has this song, I'd put aside my hesitation about singing in front of other people and perform this one. Maybe.
I will now take some time to write about a set of similarities that probably only amuse me: The parallels between Voice of the Beehive and The B-52's, especially regarding the songs Roam and I Walk the Earth. Both bands originally 5 members, two of whom were siblings. Two females, one usually blond, the other usually with red hair, who tend to dress outside the fashions of their day. Both bands named after giant 1960s hair. Both songs about exploring and embracing the wider world just because it's there. Both songs starting with lullaby-pretty a capella harmonies before the guitars start. I'm sure there are more similarities, but I'm sure I'm also boring anyone who's reading. I'd consider either of these songs for karaoke, too. I'd probably consider any song by The B-52's, especially if there were someone to do Fred parts.
Huh, looks like this is turning into a "songs you might be able to get me to do at karaoke" list. So. Groove is in the Heart. And Here and Now by Letters to Cleo--not because Il ike it, but because I know the tricky part (although I tend to want to sing it too fast). "I know the tricky part" would get me Hourglass by Squeeze, too. (The video is just silly Eighties fun.) Breakout by Swing Out Sister.
While I would take on any song by The B-52's, I'd be much more cautious about songs by The Eurythmics. Oh, sure, I know lots of them, but...I'm more a Kate/Cindy kind of vocal tham an Annie Lennox (as is most of the world, natch). Would I Lie to You? Love is a Stranger. I Need a Man. Maybe. (I wouldn't attempt this, but, the video is the ultimate Annie in a Wig experience--Dave too, a bit--The King and Queen of America.)
I'll stop now. YouTube is time-killing evil.
