In first grade I walked to the bus stop by myself every morning. Our gravel driveway wound through pine trees and around a pond. With lilac and honeysuckle and hazelnuts roadside distractions, it's remarkable I made it on time. Spring days I'd take a wet paper towel and a piece of foil with me.
