I just don 't know how this exercise is worth it. In July 2005 I managed to get plantar fasciitis when jogging. Basically the band of tendons on the bottom of your food that links the heel and the forefoot becomes torn/inflamed. It is very painful. At the time I was only 200 lbs. I think it is from running on uneven sidewalks in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Anyway take a few months off, then go back to running January 2006. The podiatrist basically took x-rays and stuff and then diagnosed Plantar Fasciitis by default. Finally he recommend custom inserts and I was like no thanks. Over the next two years I would run on and off and my weight would balloon to like 245 (almost my high school weight) due to being more hungry when not running (it's weird). Also I tried several arch support products (Spenco that the podiatrist pushed, superfeet, and then powerstep (I found online). With power step I had the most release from plantar fasciitis. super feet have a thin one for work shoes which is a lifesaver. I can't run with the superfeet but for walking it helps a lot.
Then end 2007 my toe starts to hurt, probably morton's neuroma. So I visit another podiatrist, pay for $500 custom inserts. And now I have almost no pain when running. So I managed to get to running everyday. And my weight went down to 230 and was going down quick. I also started eating less (yay!!). Then one day within a few steps I went from nothing to excruciating pain in my knee and I couldn't even walk home.
So I took a week off and could walk without pain. So the next week I tried to run. Boom instant pain. However if I kept my legs together when running no pain. So I did that for a week and saw my doctor. He did an ultrasound (I don't know why) and then said to see an orthopedic. I suspect he just figured he could bill some money out of my insurance company. Then two weeks later (now downgraded to power walking which doesn't hurt at all as long as I don't have my legs too widely spread) I went to the orthopedic doctor. My knee itself only hurt when I changed direction or put weight on it when widely spread. He managed to find a spot where he pressed and it hurt a lot. After his examination the knee hurt all the time for the next two days. And now it feels tight whenever I walk on it. He sent me for an MRI, basically thinking I tore my meniscus. He also banned me from Alleve in case he has to operate. He could have made up another reason to ban me from Alleve, I really didn't need to hear that. I think I have never been operated on.
The MRI was a bit scary because they didn't make me strip and get into a gown. Since it uses magnets and I heard the stories of any metal in the room flying into the machine, I was a bit worried. Also there was metal all over the room. Even the keys that locked the contents of my pocket were in the room. So I was pretty freaked out. Also I'm not sure if I had surgery in the past, my parents would hide something like that from me if I was too young to remember. So there was always the potential I had some type of metal in me. But anyway after it started and nothing happened, it was pretty boring. I heard the roar of the gradient magnets creating a percussion aside Bon Jovi (my music selection). I didn't recognize a ton of the music they played from him. It is odd because I have or have heard most of his CD's.
Oh well running/jogging just doesn't seem worth it. Also for my two weeks of power walking, I still dropped weight. And I think power walking is much less stressful on the body except for the toe joints which are getting tendinitis. And the shins if you aren't careful. But if I power walk just like I am going to jog but without launching off the ground or shifting my weight forward then my shins to ache like crazy. Maybe I will wait until I get back to 205 or 210 lbs before resuming jogging again. Being 30 seems to suck if my body is going to fall apart. |
