AN: I just wanted to take a moment and thank my two Beta readers ldyghstwhisprer Who lets me call her an yammer on about a chapter. She pretty much yeas or nays my ideas… You know come to think if it… She’s a lot like Kripke… Well except taller… And with more hair…And realscape, Who has taken the BULK of correcting my grammatical errors and reminded me why commas are important! Big hugs and kisses to you both!!! Jared didn’t come to the door one afternoon after I heard his truck pull up. I glanced out of my window thinking that I was hearing things but his truck sat in my driveway. I slipped some shoes on and jogged next door. My eyes widened in alarm at the sound of Olivia screaming. I didn’t even bother to knock. I just burst through her door expecting the worst. Her name was on my lips as I turned the corner leading into her kitchen. I was hit with a full body slam, followed by a startled yelp. It was Olivia. My hands immediately went to her shoulders to steady her. “Christ Liv, are you okay?” Her face was rosy and her whiskey colored eyes sparkled. “Damn it, Liv that’s low,” Jared’s growl came from somewhere in the house. “Here,” she whispered urgently and pressed a squirt gun in my hands, just as Jared’s head peered around the corner. I was startled to see Jared’s white shirt was stained with splotches of blue and red. Where they met it blended into purple. “Ha,” Jared leapt out from around the corner and fired. He missed us by miles. Olivia shrieked with laughter and ducked under my arm. She used my body as a shield. I channeled my inner Dean and shot him in the forehead with blue dye. “Son of a…” Jared growled as he wiped his face. “Language,” Olivia laughed from behind me, her hands clutching at my tee shirt and the waistband of my jeans as she peaked out from behind me. “Sorry dude,” I gave him a mock shrug. “Oh it’s on Cackles,” Jared took aim as Olivia squeaked and dodged out of the way giving me room to move. “Mom, I found it,” Bryce yelled breathlessly holding up another water pistol. He slid it across the floor towards his mother. Jared caught it with one of his monstrous feet. “Hah, now I have two,” Jared crowed. “Hey that’s not fair,” Bryce gasped in mock outrage. Through the chair legs we could see him running towards Jared. He flew at him with an impressive tackle that barely caught Jared around the waist. The added weight caused Jared to take a few staggering steps forward. The kid gamely hung on as Jared laughed and bucked. “We need a diversion,” I whispered to Olivia. “Okay,” she pursed her lips and thought for a moment. “I’ve got an idea. Just be ready to get him!” “Whoa! Wait.” She belly crawled out from under the table and ran for the couch. She peaked over the back and flung a throw pillow at Jared. “Hey,” he turned towards her. “Bryce run,” I yelled and popped up over the dinning room table. Firing wildly. Pillows flew. We were laughing madly and were all soaking wet by the time we dropped onto the living room floor to catch our breath. “Oh my god,” Olivia panted. “That was so much fun.” Bryce bounced on Jared’s lower back for a moment. “Man these guns suck,” I commented, peering at the one I was holding. “Hey,” Olivia playfully swatted my arm. Jared scowled at me. “You need bigger ones,” I grinned at Bryce. “Oh hell yeah,” Jared laughed. “Bigger ones mean that you’re playing outside,” Olivia shook her finger at us. “But Liv,” Jared batted his baby blues at her. “You have to play with us too.” “We can tag team,” Bryce piped up as he slipped off Jared’s back. He maneuvered around so that he could lie on his mother’s stomach. Her long fingers gently stroked through her son’s sweat dampened hair. Her eyes were half closed and there was a look of contentment written on her face. “Can Bryce come and play video games with us?” Jared asked breaking through the moment of stillness. Liv blinked amber eyes open, looking like a cat just waking up from a nap. “Video games?” “My buddy Mike is coming over in a little while,” I told her and propped myself up on an elbow. “We need a fourth.” “Can I?” Bryce begged. “Oh I don’t…” “Please?” Jared spoke up. “Please?” I added my contribution. “God what is with you guys,” she muttered in an exasperated voice and looked hard at her son. I sat up prepared to give her more assurances. “What time is it?” I glanced at my watch and started to tell her when I found my forehead pressed against the soft side of one of her breasts. She’d thrown an arm around my shoulders and clamped a hand over my mouth. “Bryce, what time is it?” She repeated her question. I could see him glancing at the clock on the wall. “2:40?” “Okay so if you have to be home in an hour and a half what time would it be?” Bryce started hard at the clock with a faint frown. Jared all but vibrated with the urge to tell him. It was hard to tell who was the kid here. “Back up,” she told him patiently. “If you have to be home in an hour…” “That would be 3:40?” “Good job, bright boy,” she grinned at her son. “Now add thirty minutes…” “4:10?” “My son’s a genius,” she laughed at him. “Go change your shirt.” Bryce whooped and took off running. Then she suddenly realized that I was still in a headlock. “Sorry,” she chuckled and patted my shoulder. “He’s having problems learning how to tell time.” “Can we help?” Jared asked. “Just do what I did. Make him tell you the time and let him figure out how much time he has left or whatever,” she shrugged and picked herself up off the floor. “He just needs to practice.” “We can do that,” Jared grinned.
Bryce was sitting on the couch watching as Jay and I fought to get his Play Station hooked into my system when the doorbell rang. “I told you to get one of those router switches,” Jared grumbled. “Could you get that?” I asked Bryce as I smacked one of Jared’s paws away from the cables. “Yes sir,” he snickered at the look of outrage on Jared’s face. I heard the door open, then slam shut. Next thing Bryce was calling my name. I banged the top of my head on one of the shelves as I shot upright, wondering what had put that tone in his voice. “Son of a…” I swallowed back the rest of my curse and took in the fact that Bryce had his back pressed against the door. “Was that Mike?” I asked Bryce. “No,” he said, his eyes huge. “It was Lex Luthor.” Jared’s roar of laughter probably could have been heard in Texas. I couldn’t help the laughter that escaped. I nudged him out of the way and opened my door to see Mike walking slowly back to his car looking confused. “Rosie,” I called out. “Jen, what the fuck?” He scowled at me. “Sorry man,” I was fighting hard not to laugh. Bryce was standing in between Jared’s knees as he tried to wipe away the tears of laughter. “Mike is an actor,” Jared was telling him. “Like you and Jen?” Bryce asked. His head was cocked to one side and he had a look of fierce concentration on his face. “Yep, except we’re better. He’s not really Lex Luthor,” I could see Jared’s shoulders shaking with humor. “Bryce lives next door,” I explained to Mike. “Bryce, this is my very good friend Mike.” |
