Rule #1

My Rating: 3 / 5

Plot Outline: A cop gets severely injured after discovering a body in the boot of a serial killer's car. Being able to see ghosts and spirits after the incident, he was transfered to the dodgy Miscellaneous Affairs Department. There, he learns that the department takes on the supernatural and hides them behind the mandate - "There is no ghosts.". A series of murders lead the two cops on a bloody trail.

The first half an hour of Rule #1 is gripping. The supernatural cases that the main lead investigated were eerie and you are sure to jump out your seat at times. However, after the initial suspense, the movie degrades in terms of the tension and anticipation one gets from scarey movies. This is mainly attributed to the storyline of the ghostly serial killer and its ability to possess and repossess humans, leaving them an empty shell each time. The whole idea although interesting was not very entertaining and the murders were shot in a badly cliche manner.

Moreover, the ending was extremely dumb. Attempting to surprise the audience with a twist, the last ten minutes of the movie "rewinded" and showed the actual events that happened. In a sense, the conclusion backfired. It would have been much better had the ending kept with the initial events leading up to the death of his partner.

A slightly better ghost movie than Kelvin Tong's other movie - The Maid - but disappointing nevertheless.

10,000 BC

My Rating: 2.5 / 5

Plot Outline: Set during the prehistoric era, a young mammoth hunter gets embroiled in revolt against the people's oppressors. He journeys through dangerous lands to find his beloved and rescue his tribesmen.

The trailer looked really really good. But the movie itself was highly disappointing. It was swamped with ridiculous controversies like the great pyramids and constellations. Therewere huge errors. If you were to do a simple research, you will realize that

1. Like metal works was not mastered till 5,500 BC.
2. Sabretooth Tigers apparently did not exist during this era.
3. Mammoths have female herd heads, not males...
4. Ships didn't exist then.

The list goes on...

[info]barefootlawyerpointed out that they mixed actors of different nationalities and expected the audience to believe they were all from the same roots. =.= The villains looked like eunuchs. The termination of the evil doer was highly anti-climatic as well.

Really, really not worth the weekend cinema fares for this. LOL

The Leap Years

My Rating: 3 / 5

Plot Outline: Li-Ann decides to practise an Irish leap year tradition that no man will refuse any request of a lady and invites him out for a date on 29 February. Since then, the couple embark on a romantic journey that spans over 12 years, meeting only thrice in 12 years.

Based on the novel by local acclaimed writer, Catherine Lim, The Leap Years is a really sweet romance flick. You get to see many local actors and their performance was stunning. At least, not like TCS8 drama mama acting if you get my drift. The other good thing is that it is the first local movie with an awesome soundtrack.

If you are the type who digs romance chick flick, you will probably not want to miss The Leap Years.
