War? Maybe small scale skirmish, but I certainly wouldn't call this cliche story a war. The basic plot is the classic mafia gang war for turf, centered around the ancient rivalry between the Yakuza from Japan and Triad from China, both making a play for turf in San Francisco. A couple of FBI agents end up involved in this, and one of the FBI partners and his family gets killed by the Yakuza assassin Rogue played by Jet Li. (They couldn't come up with a better name?) Three years later, and a massive fence operation by the Yakuza becomes botched as the assassin Rogue turns against them and works for Triad instead and steals the stolen goods. Meanwhile, the FBI partner played by Jason Statham continues to attempt to catch Rogue and punish him for what happened to his dead partner. The movie has many twists and turns that I won't reveal, but this is no Crank as the pacing is really bad with a lot of dialogue in between action sequences. You'd think a movie called War would have more action and less talk.
Now Resident Evil: Extinction is exactly what you expect. Alice played by babe Milla Jovovich is back in full glory doing what she does best, killing zombies and infected animals with a combination of psionics, bullets, blades, and martial arts. The world is dying, and Alice and a few survivors whose convoy brings back memories of the Road Warriors, battle for survival in Utah and Nevada, where Umbrella corporation becomes aware of the original Alice's continued survival through spikes of psionic power. The rest of the plot follows RE3 to a captial T. An insane doctor's continued experimentation on the zombies with clones of Alice brings a new deadlier, smarter zombie into existence, with an even deadlier and more potent T virus. The doctor is infected with the new strain and injects a ton of anti-virus into himself, and becomes Nemesis, going berzerk in the Nevada facility. The end of the movie involves a fight between Nemesis and Alice, and leaves room for another sequel. I'd actually really like to see a Fourth installment, as the next stage of the story looks like a lot of fun. |
