Taxidermia

My Rating: 4 / 5

Plot Outline: Taxidermia chronicles characters spanning over three generations of obssesions. The grandfather is a sex addict, the father has an issue with speed eating and lastly, the taxidermist who takes his job too seriously. These obsessions ultimately destroy each of them.

Review: Taxidermia is a movie that will leave one feeling extremely disgusted or extremely thoughtful and perhaps for certain people, both apply. We all have our own personal quirks and addictions and the Taxidermia characters are extreme in its neccessity to tell an interesting story. I got a first hand experience of Hungarian humor and though I was not exactly impressed, it is rather easy for one to understand its satirical irony.

As said, Taxidermia is extreme not only in characterization but also in its narration style. There are quite a lot of what I call "poetic silence" bits in the movie where the camera tracks the characters merely through his expressions and actions. Through following the slow but graphic details, it is macabre artistry.

The other good thing? The settings were highly realistic and colorful in a 1980s kind of way.

Iron Man

My Rating: 4 / 5

Plot Outline: Tony Stark, a billionaire genius creates a suit of armor and fights against the corporate villains.

Review: I believe many of those who read the Iron Man comics went to watch the movie expecting to be disappointed. So did I, although I've never even touched the cover of the comic. I did some background study and together with a crash course from a fellow comic fan, I managed to glean some history on Tony Stark.
/>I must say that Robert Downey Jr (>.<) gave a very good performance despite heavy criticism and negativity from the public due to his previous drug problems. I was also told that the storyline went along relatively close to the comic as well. Dry humor was in abundance and I loved Stark's AI personality. The suit was sleek and cool. Not too boxy. The soundtrack was cooler.

The only down side was Gwyneth Paltrow's utterly redundant role in the movie. Oh yah, and Samuel L. Jackson's appearance as the leader of SHIELD right at the end of the credits.

Speed Racer

My Rating: 3.5 / 5

Plot Outline: Speed Racer joins the race after his brother's tragic accident. He chooses his family and principles over the fame and fortune offered by conglomerates and realizes that all is not what it seems.

Review: Right, since I gave Speed Racer a 3.5 rating, it's clear I don't understand why there're so many people who said the movie was crap. It must be the colorful and obviously fake back drop and the horrible fashion sense of the highly exaggerated characters.

Well, wake up people! This is a "cosmopolitan" movie directed by the Wachowskis from a Japanese anime. Of course it's going to be over the top! Kudos to the directors for the marvelous CG work yet again. I love the scintillating flashing colors and drag lights (for speed) and the races kept me on the edge of the seat. And yes, I love cars. I love racing. I loved watching Formula 1 until cable tv was no longer made available to me.

But I guess most of all was that I love that they kept the essence of the Japanese anime in an American made movie. Cheesy as that sounds.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of Crystal Skulls

My Rating: 3 / 5

Plot Outline: Indiana Jones and his family goes on to find the crystal skull and return it to its rightful owner before the Russians beat them at their game.

Review: I cannot believe that Steven Spielberg veered away from his supernatural cum godly themes from the Indie predeccessors. I agree with [info]barefootlawyer. They should never have gone into the whole alien plotline because it ruined it for me.

I can however, appreciate the lengths at which the production crew had taken to retain that old movie flavor. What with playing Elvis's Hound Dog, speed racing mini cars and biker kids with really really high hair styles, and especially the tone and color of the setting. Chronological time line is indicated through what the audience know of our actual history. From Germans being the villains, Indie is now dealing with the Russians. Ah yes, how can we forget about the cold war and Russian communism?

Cate Blanchett's Russian accent was really good. She looked so unlike herself that I had to check myself to see if it was really her. In all, I thought the actors were going along with the Indie vibe a lot. Nostalgic yet?

To put it simply, everything was pretty good but the story line let it all down.
