Threshold (Series) Season 1, Disc 1 - 2005

Carla Gugino (Dr. Caffrey), Brian Van Holt (Sean Cavennaugh), Brent Spiner (Dr. Fenway), Rob Benedict (Lucas Pegg), Peter Dinklage (Arthur Ramsey), Charles S. Dutton (JT Baylock).

Episodes: Trees Made of Glass, Blood of the Children, The Burning.

When an alien spacecraft is sighted over the ocean by the crew of a ship, the Navy creates the Threshold group, drafting a group of experts in the process, to investigate. It soon becomes apparent that aliens have visited and have somehow, for some reason, infected a portion of the human population. The story so far focuses on investigation of the event and preparation to mitigate infection while preparing for an alien attack.

This was originally a CBS series that was planned as 13 episodes and cancelled after 10 even though production had started on a 14th episode. So far the series has moved along fairly well with good action and movement of the story in every episode. There are also enough twists in the plot to actually keep it interesting. Although I wouldn’t agree that the series should have been cancelled, I do remember why I didn’t watch it more religiously when it originally aired. There just aren’t enough special effects, alien sightings, blood and guts, or sex to keep interest high. The only thing it has so far are the twists thrown in around how humans are being infected by the aliens.

Acting is mediocre all around with some minor overacting by Cavennaugh, Spiner and Dinklage. Their characters just aren’t believeable at points, nor that they would react as severely or unusually as they do. The special effects that are present in the movie are done fairly well as is the soundtrack. Filming was well done but some of the darker scenes were a bit too dark to resolve on a smaller screen.

I don’t know the rating of the series but what I have seen so far is able to be viewed by all but the smallest of children. Very minor language, some violence and blood, and no sex (implied or otherwise) or nudity. Worth watching if you are a true sci-fi/alien fan otherwise, take a pass on this one.

Season 1 Disc 2 coming soon!
