*what I'm calling the current LJInc clusterfuck, since creation of new basic accounts has (temporarily at least) been banned.
For a review of previous fuck-ups dating back to 05, see this excellent list.
Now on to the wank:
LJinc offers an apology for not doing what they said they would do (some would call this lying):
Since the launch of LiveJournal, Inc., we have been working on creating the best approach to develop the platform and, in particular, communicate with users about how to include you in this process.
The policy we have decided on is simple: first, proposals affecting overall user experience will be posted for comments; then, a final document will be distributed after a period of discussion with final decisions being based on feedback from the Advisory Board and you. [...] The announcement last Wednesday was a mistake in regards to Basic accounts, as the change was not clearly stated, it did not allow for you to provide feedback, and went into effect immediately. Many of you have pointed out that the decision worried you less than the way it was communicated. You should have been given a voice, and you were not; we didn’t follow our own rules, and we apologize.[emphasis mine] Ummmmm, if by "not clearly stated" you mean "stated as ambiguously as possible in an attempt to slip it by" then yes. This is *all* it said in the news announcement about REMOVING THE OPTION FOR BASIC ACCOUNTS:
Other changes you may have noticed are the logged-out homepage and registration process for new users. We streamlined and simplified things so that now it’s faster and easier than ever to create a LiveJournal account. Streamlining the registration process = getting rid of a whole account level. Yep, clear as mud. SO even as LJinc "apologizes", they're still obfuscating and spinning for all they're worth. Good job guys. Way to build trust. And of course, even better, there's the initial response to the outpouring of outrage as users realized what had been snuck by them:
Overnight you also raised legitimate concerns about how this change was unveiled - message received, loud and clear. We're still working out how to strike just the right tone when communicating with such a diverse and complex collection of communities.[emphasis mine] Wow, condescend much? So the only issue with telling us something by *not* telling us, was that it didn't strike the right tone because we're such a strange demanding speshuul complex collection of individuals. When I hear that phrase used, it is not meant to be a compliment.
Leaving the lies and veiled insults and spin aside for the moment, tacked on to the bottom of the apology post were these jems of questions for the community:
Open questions * Revenue sharing - Should users be rewarded for their content and contributions? * Advertising – What are the best ways of integrating commercial opportunities (for both users and brands) into LiveJournal? * Subscriptions – Should moderators be able to charge for access to closed communities? I join most responders in a hearty Whut The Fuck. If LJinc goes ahead with any of these plans, it will be with heavy opposition, which will be against what they said they were going to do at the beginning .... what, a company tell the same lie twice? Never ...
But on to more Lies and the Lying Liars who tell them: After the sneaky basic banning was discovered by some eagle eyed LJers, Jason Shellen, VP of Product Development for LiveJournal jumped in to comments to prevent any misunderstandings:
From a product perspective it was more about creating a new registration process that was easier for new users to understand. I'm sure it's been ages since many of you signed up for an account, but it was quite confusing and included a table of options that was not very inviting to new users.
For new users to the site, the options of either having an ad-supported journal or the option to pay $20 annually for more (2GB) photo storage, more userpics, and ad-controls seems like a much simpler and easy to understand work-flow. We are working hard to add even more features and are currently revisiting our ad-supported strategy to find ways to deliver more user value in a way that isn't crass. So you're nobly trying to save us from confusion, and 2 options is less confusing than 3. Right? Right?
Opps, actually it turns out they're testing a new type of sponsored account which would bring the choices back up to 3 again. So I guess 3 choices are only confusing when ads are not involved. Huh.
So we're all done with the lying now right? Right? ..... sorry, I hate to break your bubble, but not quite. Now LJinc didn't let the community as a whole comment on the basic ban, but surely they ran it by their *much vaunted* advisory committee? You know the advisory committee that was supposed to reassure everyone that SUP was going to fuck things up when they purchased livejournal. So those awesome advisory board members, such as Brad Fitzpatrick, the original creator of livejournal, they were consulted, right .... well they kind of were, and then their opinions were totally ignored and now they're really pissed. Huh. So much for the awesome advisory board. But elections to get on it are coming up soon! If you work hard kiddies, you could get yourself a valuable doormat spot!
You know what, I think that's enough on Basic Ban 08 for one post. Much of this was probably waaay tl;dr for many of you, but just in case, I've got enough material for another whole one! Yay!
Oh, one last thing: here's a post with info about getting off LJ for those who ... I dunno, are pissed about all the lying, and don't trust our evil overlords further than they can throw them .... or something. ;) |
