Is there another game with the potential to piss people off more than Monopoly?
It's not that someone just wins the game, it's that the winner, by definition, has to personally destroy each other player's chance of winning. The best games involve a lot of skill and a little luck, but Monopoly is equal parts luck and aggressiveness, which are not qualities for a winner to have that make you feel good about losing.
I still remember as a kid, being near tears as I mortgaged property after property after landing on a hoteled Park Place or St. James Avenue. I also remember being on the winning side of things and having my opponents flip the board over in anger or throw the money around the room. In fact, the last game of Monopoly I ever played was, I believe, when Rachel and I were engaged, and was called off early by me to avoid any hurt feelings.
It's a pretty terrible concept, when you think about it. The "winner" has put people out of business via his ruthlessness. In real life, this guy would be a villian, like Wal-Mart, but in Monopoly, he's the hero. No wonder it makes people so mad.
I'll stick to Scrabble, where your only possible beef is getting a bad draw - and that's a weak beef at best. |
