I'm constantly tossing interesting websites into what I call my blogpile. Some of them find their way here in the form of regular posts, but more often than not they languish and get buried deeper in the pile. The end result is that I have to go back and do a bit of shoveling. --Jeff Hess, Have Coffee, Will Write, Blogpiles I'm not nearly as smart as people think I am; I just try to remember where I see things, and to connect that to the people it will interest. (My mom refers to this skill as "having a mind like a relational database.") I've been reading web pages for over a dozen years, and have been bookmarking them for almost all of that time. They aren't necessarily sites I like, but sometimes sites that I think my friends will enjoy. I've finally begun to upload the links for public access, via social bookmarking, beginning with del.icio.us and my StumbleUpon. Once I've got the backlog - currently 2848 - uploaded, I'll export them to other social bookmark sites and then update them all. The problem is that I keep coming across MORE interesting sites. And groups of sites. Here are the 98 bookmarks I added this week to rebekahsue.stumbleupon.com and del.icio.us/rebekahsue. - Desktop Toolbar
From Idealab, this free toolbar links to popular news sites, search engines, reference sites, code utilities, media, and community. If your browser isn't already overwhelmed with toolbars, this is one to consider. USPS - Auctions The United States Post Office auctions of unclaimed, damaged, and claim-paid merchandise. This page gives the dates and locations of upcoming auctions, as well as the terms of payment. Note that these auctions are in-person, not online. - ABC News: Online news, breaking news, feature stories and more
Home page for the American Broadcasting Company's news page. Constantly updating, it also offers archives, and links to ABC shows Good Morning America, World News, and the "news magazines" 20/20 and Primetime. Look at world news, what's new in tech, what's going on with legal issues, the latest in politics, and what's going on in the United States. This is a site in which "Health" comes BEFORE "Entertainment." If you care, you can subscribe to email and news alerts. - U.S. Treasury - Seized Property Auctions
The United States Treasury will auction items seized during illegal activity. Items - including automobiles and real property - are auctioned, and you can get information via this web page. There is also a link to the United States Post Office's auctions of unclaimed, damaged, and claim-paid merchandise. - onSale.com - Plasma TV Electronics & Accessories
I'd never heard of OnSale.com before finding it in the bookmark page of that Darren 'Gav' Bleuel guy whose bookmark page I've been perusing for the past month. It's another online discount wholesaler for electronics and computers - you can never know of too many of these sites when you're comparison shopping! They are USA-based (Torrence, CA). and purchases earn cashback via ebates.com. - Don't Mess With Our Chocolate
Recommended by Women's Wall Street on 06-JUL-2007, Don't Mess With Our Chocolate is a chocolate purists' site that's taking a position against the U.S. Chocolate Industry. The Industry is considering allowing some vegetable oils into our chocolate, as a substitution for cocoa butter. (This is in response to petitions from industrial chocolate makers who are looking for a place to cut costs in expensive production). This, in the eyes of Don't Mess With Our Chocolate, adversely affects the integrity of good chocolate. - Hotel Reservations
One-stop shopping for vacation planning, with hotel, flight, car rental, vacation rentals, and vacation packages available. Toll-free number if you don't want to book online. A Pay-Per-Post opportunity that I took on 06-JUL-2007 - Investigations: How To Make Your Computer Catch People Stealing Your Porn - Consumerist
The Consumerist staff brought computers to different Geek Squads to see what they'd do when paid to ONLY install iTunes. (One "installer" stole "porn videos" left by The Consumerist.) This step-by-step shows you how you can set your computer to see what installers/techs are doing. It is suggested, by the way, that you keep your personal files/banking/porn on an external hard drive so that, if you have to bring in your computer, you can leave your precious files safe at home. Article and links are SFW. - Hebrew for ME
This site's focus is language learning. The company, which opened in 1996, has a fondness for non-Latin alphabets like Hebrew. Using Java and the graphics, it allows the student to "complete a picture," learning Hebrew in the process. (See the " How to Use " link in the left sidebar.) Via a LJ post in the WeirdJews community. Internet Public Library The Internet Public Library - like that place I'd go when I was an adolescent to look for the Book of Counted Sorrows, but I can look in my jammies. And with a ton more information than was available in 1982. Founded by the University of Michigan School of Information and hosted by Drexel University's College of Information Science & Technology, it offers resources and/or links on thousands of topics and sub-topics. Its mission is that of public service and to share what its founders and staff have learned. True learning geeks will bookmark this site as I have. ANS Medical - Determining chronic pain causes and treatments An option in chronic pain management is neurostimulation; another is a drug pump. ANS is one company providing this service to patients. The site helps you to find a physician, look at your pain to see if you're a candidate, and offers a video to help you decide if these options are right for you.
