Vermin.

Via urbpan : Nice vermin PR article on Cracked. Points of interest (to me, anyway): 1. I have kept two of the five critters on the main banner as pets (three if you count the E. coli .), and I spent a good year with mosquitos (albeit dead ones). Now I just need to make friends with some wasps so I can win the vermin bingo. 2. The first mosquito photo is not a mosquito . It's a crane fly...

Another recipe

If you're wondering about the sudden interest in healthy foods, there are two main reasons. First, I've become a vegetarian (at least until I can find a source of cruelty-free meat. Even then, I may give up on beef and pork). I blame this entry for my vegetarianism: http://urbpan.livejournal.com/833099.html (No hard feelings, urbpan .) Also, the idea of Community Supported Agriculture has...

Spotlight on urban nature!

Our little community is about to be in the livejournal spotlight! This is a nice, good thing, but we should brace ourselves for about 20 posts a day of blurry cellphone pictures of cats and tulips in people's back yards. I've been through this before, and it's kind of overwhelming, but it's kind of fun too. We can direct bug and spider queries to whats_that_bug and entomology and...

Redwoods in Portland?

My wife's coworker gave her a redwood burl .  If, as seems increasingly likely, we move to Portland , and the burl survives and grows into a happy little plant, would it survive outside?  Would it become a little sequoia in our yard? The current natural range of the tree stops at the southern coast of Oregon.  What is the limiting factor that prevents it from living in the Portland area, or for...

There are good days, bad days, and cephalopod days

Today is a cephalopod day. I showed an image of a "dumbo octopus" to thetotorocatbus and he said, " Grimpoteuthis !" Of course I had to rush off and read more about the genus. Google is my best friend. After 10 minutes of speed-reading and speed-surfing, I discovered the following not-so-related fun things: Trilobite cookies by Mr. Velocipede ( Flickr ). Ammonite pastries...

Sunshine: Hey would you idiots stop bickering over the phone long enough to save all life on earth?!

(This is a review I wrote some time ago.  The BBT link to it is not working, so I'm republishing it here.) If they can put a man on the moon, why can’t they send a whole crew up to the sun to die horribly?  In Sunshine , our closest star is dying, and so naturally a giant bomb will save it.  Send a space ship up with an explosive the size of New York and load up Cillian Murphy, Michelle Yeoh, and...
