What is this I don't even

If anyone wants some proof that not all philosophers are intelligent, the best place to look is this post in philosophy . I don't want to spoil it for you, so I'll just tease you all with this quote from anadinboy : a straight man feels an urge to penitrate a hole, a straight girl feels an urge to be penitrated. For a man to feel an urge to be penitrated is unnatural. But gays...

I don't believe in IQ as a predictor of intellectual success. It certainly doesn't help inoculate against douchebaggery. One of the highest IQs in the world, Christopher Langan , is a total jackass besides espousing philosophical theories weaker than most undergrad work I've seen in philosophy --and that's not an insult I throw around lightly.

On Human Freedom and Morality

"A rational being must always regard himself as legislator in a kingdom of ends rendered possible by freedom of the will, whether as member or as sovereign." -- Immanuel Kant, "Grounding of the Metaphysics of Morals." In a recent post, rpeate asked about two things, intimately related. They were human freedom and moral truth. It distressed me significantly to see people that otherwise venerate...

Antitheistic idiocy, purposive mayhem, and laughable paranoia

I have recently been having some fun over at antitheism . My initial intention was to participate in the community with the occasional comment, engaging others in a friendly but critical manner. But when I noticed that the moderator, rpeate , was playing favorites, banning members unfairly, and generally preferring dictatorial rule to dialogue, I called him out on it several times....

Entropy and Intelligence

(This is a cross-post from an OP I wrote elsewhere sometime back. I wanted to post it here again because of a conversation I'm having with root_fu regarding the nature of entropy, complexity, and simplicity, where I make a claim about the direction of nature and entropy from simple-to-complex rather than in the other direction. It has pretty pictures, too, and the last time I posted this...

A sign

The number of posts in philosophy has dropped considerably in the last two months. Why is this? The mods clearly have nothing to do with it, since they are the epitome of excellence when it comes to community maintenance. Maybe it’s…[fill in the blank].

Unknowability of the World as Object and Community PSA

You may have noticed a recent warning given to enders_shadow for this spam post , which clearly violated the anti-spamming guidelines by quoting something and providing no context or discussion or opinion from the person doing the quoting. What I would like to highlight is a new thing we're trying as a moderation technique, which is twofold: 1. Using demotion to "comment only" status as...

Aristotle (and Aquinas) on the agent intellect: REVISITED

This is a response to anosognosia ’s astute comments upon our earlier discussions concerning the agent intellect in Aristotle and Aquinas. Anyone else with an interest in this discussion may chime in as they please. In what follows, references are to Aristotle’s On the Soul unless otherwise indicated. *T = Each human soul possesses an agent intellect as one of its parts, faculties, powers...
