Good news!

Via cassiphone The bowel cancer drug Avastin is among those to be added to the list of subsidised drugs under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). This was the drug that the SF community raised almost $30 000 for paulhaines so that he could have more ammunition when he pulled out the big guns and went fighting. Seeing how important this was to him and his family so that he...

The Curious Case of Forrest Gump

For paulhaines , who called it first : The Curious Case of Forrest Gump - watch more funny videos So damn obvious now, although it doesn't explain why I loved the Benjamin Button movie but never could stand Forrest Gump. Maybe the Cate Blanchett/Tilda Swinton factor has something to do with it ... because I would sit through almost anything to watch either of those ladies do what...

ellen_datlow  posts today about Edgar Allan Poe's birthday. I received my copy of "Poe: 19 New Tales Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe" before Christmas, and I'm loving it. Partly because it feeds into my love of the man and his writing; all the authors were inspired by one or more of his stories, and all have interpreted this inspiration into story. The cover is dark and creepy, with a beady...

Doorways for the Dispossessed, Paul Haines

Some months back, I bid for and got myself a copy of paulhaines 's collection from Prime Books, Doorways for the Dispossessed , during the amazing Art That Scares You online auction. It was really the main thing I wanted, so I was chuffed as hell to have gotten it. And, ever since, it's sat on my to-read pile gathering dust. Until now. I thought I'd read some of Paul's stories, but I seem...

Voices

My contributor copy of Voices has arrived. Despite some formatting issues, my own story seems to have settled in nicely. Most importantly, $2 from every sale of the Australian edition goes towards helping friend and fellow writer paulhaines tell cancer where to get off. So check it out !     Prologue – Robert Hood Sanctuary – Carole Johnstone The Mirror – KV Taylor His Only...

The Shiny Black Box & The Enigmatic Meme

Scott's out jamming with Alarum - and I'm trying to get the place warmed up enough for today's vocal practice. Now that I have a gig scheduled at the beginning of October, I've been comparison shopping various bass amps suitable for use with my curvy friend, and have settled on this: The Shiny Black Box Roland CUBE-30 BASS Bass Amplifier When it comes to...

OZSF Carnivale in September

Welcome to the OZSF carnivale for September 2008. First up, of course, a deathknell! jiraiyanews asks (and I paraphrase): when we stopped complaining, did we stop caring? The slump in modern local indie publishing . benpayne counters with: who has time to care? Too much to read . (He does notice some webzines closing down , though. Deathknell, I cry!) Speaking of reading,...
