I is 20 today!

Well, if you're counting in hexadecimal that is :-) There shall be food and there shall be beer and there shall be relaxation sometime in my near future... But for now, there is turtle! Many, many thanks to gleth , debitha , owlfish (and C.), jacel , a_d_medievalist , cynicaloptimist , daisho and firenightingale for adopting a leatherback...

Back from Alderney

Oh that was a wonderful break as ever! We think it's the fifth time we've been and despite the loss of "Gannets" restaurant (sniff) it is still a fabulous place. We had two really warm and sunny days and managed to spend them on the beach with books and paddling. I went swimming in the sea a total of 5 times. It was only freezing cold for the first one - or maybe I adjusted. We're both browner than...

So T and I went for afternoon tea at Fortnum and Mason on Saturday with owlfish , C. and daisho While the tea was very pleasant and the replenishments were frequent enough to curb, if not tame, my appetite, the really cool thing was the coffee table we found when wandering afterwards: Castle Jigsaw It's a coffee table that is also a 3D jigsaw of a castle! They also do a dingin...

K'zoo 2

Yesterday a.m. we were up early to get to the blogger meetup, where I finally got to meet ancarett and a_d_medievalist and of course to see owlfish , plus we met a whole bunch of LJ and blog people whose identities remain obscure to me. Alas. Outside, we ran into angevin2 briefly, but unfortunately she was laid low with killer death plague. Mostly I just went to panels...

Conference update

So here we are in lovely Kalamazoo, doing what K'zoo people do. Yesterday morning Julia and I went to a rather odd session where I learned both the secret meaning of the Voynich manuscript and that the Cathars knew about the structure of the Milky Way and that we are in the End Times. Lovely. My own session (admirably organized by owlfish ) was well attended and apparently, or so I hear, a...

Never judge a reader by the cover of their book

A while back I read an interesting post on Shana’s blog that got me to thinking. Being a rabid e-book advocate these days I’d not really thought much about the external influence of book covers on people other than the reader. Most people I’ve heard talk about covers in the past, when mentioning other people at least, have generally focused on the point of showing off what you are reading to those...

My Eastercon

I had a lovely time in Bradford. All 4 panels I was on went well and the moderating was nothing like as scary as before. I think the facilitation course I'd been on for work had really helped. I had several unsolicited compliments from both panellists and audience members alike, which was lovely. I went to many excellent panels, talks and lectures. The George Hay lecture was astounding - 3D printers...

Day's end

So this year I defeated the deadness of February Saturdays and did manage to go to Picocon, for which I am glad. I got to see a slim and generally healthy-looking green_knight , chat with coth , get lost in the Computer building with owlfish , laugh my head off with Robert Rankin, and, oh well, had some beer with fellow lost souls. :-) For the rest, I managed this morning to...

Small World Syndrome, DIY and other stories.

Apparently, I need to post more often, or so I have been told... A couple of weekends ago, I went round to the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition at the Natural History Museum with taldragpn and pfy . It was only after a feww beers afterwards that pfy and I figured out that: He used to live about 300 yards from me in Bath. He is the current house-mate of...
