Dear Hollywood folks

Dear Hollywood folks: I like you.  I really, really like you.  Lots of you are really my kind of people: funny, engaging, passionate about making great movies, earnest about progressive change (if a bit shallow in your politics, but lots of us are guilty of that mistake sometimes).  I confess: I am more susceptible to show biz gossip than I like to let on, and am liable to click through on the latest...

[Multilingual Monday] The Name Is The Same ... Or Not.

Blame muckefuck , who posted this a couple of days ago, about a movie title in Korean. I'm familiar with the titles of movies, books, etc., being handled on a case-by-case basis. Obviously with titles like Chicago or Erin Brokovich would be in seen in, say, Russian as Чикаго or Эрин Брокович , respectively. Sometimes full titles are translated this way -- The Hebrew title of Beavis...

"That are you and this am I"

Inspired by this entry and, more specifically, muckefuck 's comment on it : I was reminded of another Amyism. She'll say things such as "That are you and this am I", when pointing to a picture she's drawn. Fine by German grammar, where the verb agrees with the right-hand side (I suppose that's the grammatical subject?), but not in English, where you'd say "That's you and this is me"...

Bear Pride

So I'm finally back from my weekend up in Chicago which coincided with IML and Bear Pride. I had, admittedly, decided early on not to register after last year's fiasco (where I got a runaround after having missed the scant registration pick-up times and didn't get my badge until Monday morning), and money's been QUITE tight these last couple of weeks, with a few unforseen expenses here and there. I...

[Multilingual Monday] How are you -- not that I actually care!

Blame muckefuck for this one. Today's article is about stock greetings, one of which you're all very familiar with. "Hey, how are you?" Though the stock answer -- "Fine, and you?" isn't as common as it was, the question is nearly instinctive, whether or not the speaker is actually interested in the well-being of the person being asked or not, and in turn the person being asked generally doesn't...

autobiographical note

muckefuck  's invitation to an exquisite corpse made me immediately think exactly what everyone else thought (haunches, scissors). But then I thought, "wait, I've seen something like this recently in my own home!" I therefore offer, as a glimpse of life chez Richard: "She was squatting down on her brother's bottom , cutting out paper hearts with studied unconcern ." "He had sat down...

Answers to the lyrics quiz I posted on Sunday follow shortly. muckefuck and delchi were the clear "winners" this time around, and it appears that The Beatles are reasonably well known in this crowd. 1. "Let me go, boys/Let me go, boys/Let me go down in the mud/Where the rivers all run dry" is "If I Should Fall from Grace with God" by The Pogues (guessed by muckefuck and...

Geography Test #2:

In the same vein, there are names for countries that are given to them by their neighbors that don't connect easily to what we'd call those countries in English. For example, a lot of tribes might call themselves "The People", while a neighboring tribe would call them "those horse-stealing thieves to the West". The tribe we call the Cheyenne call themselves Tsitsistas ("those like us"), and the...

Ploughs

There was some discussion on muckefuck 's journal about suitable charges for flags. Quickly, how many US states have a plough on their flag? Three: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Pennsylvania http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Montana and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Alaska :)
