HP and DH parodies

I loved Deathly Hallows. I think it wouldn't have mattered what JKR decided to write I would've loved it anyway. Because when I love something I get blinded to its flaws. Unless they keep whacking me in the head repeatedly - cf season three of House. That being said, I still find these various parodies of DH very amusing and often insightful:

Just a bunch of stuff

In the wake of Harry Potter I've started reading the His Dark Materials trilogy, which I am sure will make zita_skyandano very happy. (It's also so I can look swish when the movie comes out December-ish.) The last book I read, Mainspring by Jake Lake ended up being End = Fail. You don't drag your readers through 300 pages and then take the last 20 to try and wrap everything up. That sort...

Harry Hilarity.

Many thanks to Dux for hooking us up with this gem via AMCF. This is a play-by-play review of the latest Harry Potter book. It's chock full of spoilers, of course, so you've been warned. It's probably much better if you've read the book, but even if you haven't, it might give you a chuckle here and there. At any rate, I found it quite fucking funny, and rather agreed with the author on a lot of his...

I am printing the rough draft of my WIP!!! The final climactic scene is still unwritten, but I don't think I can write it until I've figured out my characters' arcs more clearly. I don't know exactly what has to be resolved in it yet. The MS is already 450 pp and I estimate I have at least 5 more scenes to write (since I'm going to have to go back and add some POV scenes for my villain, etc.). I will...

How The MightyGodKing Are Fallen

Hey Chris! The Wayback Machine, aka the Internet Archive, has some of your older stuff , but (a) not since July 2006 and (b) nothing from behind the cut. Dammit.

update on improved_archie

Thanks for bringing this to my attention, mmsword ; apparently the owner of the comm, mightygodking , was also suspended for copyright violation. I'm kind of shocked by this; isn't parody protected speech? Moreover, wasn't mightygodking a paid user? It's one thing to suspend a community, but taking people's money, promising them one thing (free speech under the 1st Amendment...

On transformative uses of copyrighted material

So, if Andy Warhol had had an LJ, he would've been banned for appropriating Campbell Soup's trademarked label design. At least that seems to be the message behind the bannings of both the community improved_archie and its former maintainer mightygodking . Too bad. I felt like doing some transformative artwork. And for those with slower connections...

It's been a while since I talked about books or movies (pretty freaking long)

I'll use lj cuts for spoilers: First up is Soon I will be Invincible by Austin Grossman. I picked this up based on james_nicoll 's comments on it, and I wasn't disappointed. It's a frustrating book in some ways and not entirely successful, but the parts that worked really worked for me. The novel has two POV characters. First is Doctor Impossible, a mastermind-type supervillain with...

Rove's subpoena, Gonzalez on the verge of purgury charges, Strikethrough 2: Fascist Boogaloo

Gonzalez is on the verge of being brought up on purgery charges and Leahy has just slapped a subpoena on Karl Rove's ass. Oh, Leahy, you are a frightening old man who reminds me alarmingly of a toadstool, but you are a pimptastic rockstar as of today. Is is sad that the very thing that attracts me to high fantasy literature and genre television, the battle of good versus evil and that incredible Schadenfreude...
