For complicated reasons, American Psycho is one of my favorite movies ever. I don't like serial killer movies. (That's your clue.) I don't like romantic comedies, either. Which means that I am absolutely in love with this: Thanks, imnotandrei .

Sekrit Religious Messages Decoded

Sometimes you need an ex-Baptist to translate current political rhetoric. “It may be typical of the pro-Obama Dungeons & Dragons crowd to disparage a fellow countryman's memory of war from the comfort of mom's basement, but most Americans have the humility and gratitude to respect and learn from the memories of men who suffered on behalf of others,” he wrote. I've seen various people bitterly...

Olympics by Population

Inspired by imnotandrei 's post "Minor Olympic Post -- or useless statistics for the day" , I was curious about the full stats for Olympics stats by population. So I wrote a CGI script to calculate the full table of countries and their Olympic medal counts. Olympic Medals by Population The Wikipedia page ranks countries by gold medals first, with silver and bronze medals only used...

On romantic comedy and cats

imnotandrei and I have concluded that romantic comedy writers are all cat owners. We are thinking specifically of the tired, tired storyline that involves two people who meet, hate each other on sight, engage in emotionally charged banter in scene after scene, and then, somehow, inexplicably warm to each other, fall in love, and live happily ever after. We say this because we just saw Fritzi...

and home

The day after travel is always my moving through molasses jet lag day. I've taken my walk in the sunshine (I read that walking in the daylight helps adjust your internal clock ... figured it's worth a shot) & am now sitting with a cup of gazpacho, some iced tea & a grilled onion & bacon bread from Blue Ribbon. cats are in attendance (as are clouds of cat fur, 10 days worth of summer shedding. I'm trying...

taking the bike by the handles!

moloko0velocet  , whipartist   & imnotandrei and that silly quiz have reminded me that I've unfinished business. Several years back I did learn a little on a motorcycle, and puttered around the parking lot at some school up in Noe Valley.  The bike was a bit too big for me, though, and I could only do so much. But I entered my name in the lottery for a berth  in the Bay Area...

My milk jug brings all the graduate students to the yard...

So, for much of my life, starting in adolescence, I have been challenged to find a way to describe what my mother does for a living. My mother, for the record, is a Professor of Packaging at Michigan State University (and also interim director of the School of Packaging, if I recall correctly). In other words, this is what my mother does for a living -- she teaches the people who get hired to redesign...

Lovely evening

The ever-thoughtful wild_irises found herself free tonight to go see postmaudlin 's reading at City Lights, and invited me along. Now, I had already put all the Fucking Daphne / Kissing Dead Girls events in my calendar, because, hey, Daphne, and who's a bigger Daphne fangirl than I am, but between the expense and the whole new-kid thing, I was letting it slide until wild_irises...
