Truthdig: AIDS And the Myth of the Oversexed Negro

I was going to post about AIDS and the Myth of the Oversexed Negro anyway because it's a review of a number of concepts out there that have been noted but perhaps not grouped together in one place.  Gbemisola Olujobi has collected a series of quotes, including from the blogosphere, that represent some of the main lines of thinking regarding Africans and HIV.  Some of them are downright shocking...

HIV and conditional cash transfer schemes

The other day I read about this scheme in Tanzania , which would essentially give people money for not contracting STIs over a period of time.  There is are some thoughts on this with links to a number of articles on the Global Bioethics Blog here .  The concept of conditional cash transfers is new to me, although not to many.  Here's a link to a number of papers produced following CCT projects...

Malawians with HIV get pay rise

There are several interesting aspects of this article - Civil servants are the specific group being targeted with this intervention.  The intent is to prevent loss of the working population employed by the government. We do not know how "affected by the disease" is defined - does this require disclosure to someone in charge of doling out the funds?  Does disclosure therefore require testing? Does...

Why explore space? Many people dismiss space exploration as a luxury, but this attitude is not only wrong, it’s dangerous . Contest heats up for Bad Sex Awards Note how the twit links to insane groups about American Exodus I also would like to beat the living shit out of this so-called journalist with my bare hands. Yes, how dare a woman not want a child? Jesus! (Pre ETA: Date created:...

Circumcision and HIV prevention: To Cut or Not to Cut?

I'm a bit behind on the "circumcision is great for preventing HIV" curve, but I've been interested to see what others think of the news released by, among others, the New York Times , that two randomized trials, conducted in Kenya and Uganda, were halted early because  "an interim review of trial data revealed that medically performed circumcision reduced a man’s risk of acquiring HIV through heterosexual...

Pronto condoms!

This news item was on BBC the other day: Fast condoms on sale in S Africa The premise is that people are reluctant to use condoms, even in a country with relatively high HIV prevalence [I was going to cite numbers here, but it is rather complicated, so you can check the link], because they are not easy to use and because the time it takes to negotiate condom usage and actually put one on kills...

International Health News

UK Vaccination Bonds Today, BBC has an article about Chancellor Gordon Brown, who has come up with a 2.1 billion pound bond scheme to fund 500 million immunizations over the next 10 years.  The bonds are UK-funded and the Gates Foundation will also be contributing.  Supposedly the bond scheme will allow these funds to be released more immediately than funds tied up in aid budgets.  Mr Brown...
