"Change" at Podcastle!

A little while back, Rachel Swirsky, editor of audio fantasy weekly Podcastle , contacted us looking for an Ideomancer story to run as part of some (awesome!) small press solidary she's doing. We all went through the archives, and the result, gregvaneekhout "Change", is up at Podcastle this week . Congrats to Greg, and enjoy the story!

The baby ferrets are still playing. They slept for a couple of hours, but as soon as I made a noise, they were up and ready to go again. Currently they're in a box wrestling. There's lots of squeaking and hissing involved. I spent today reading a manuscript, and then I counted wraps of the yarn I'd counted last week but forgot to log...and then forgot how many wraps it was. I count them so I can...

The plan

I keep wanting to write a long entry about Blue Heaven 2009, but I keep not having enough time to put together something of appropriate length, depth, and breadth. (And also something that works as an appropriately laudatory travelogue of Kelleys Island so Marvin will stay my friend.) Suffice it for now to say that I could not be happier with the feedback and suggestions that hollailama , ...

what these people need is a honky

An excellent blog post by the estimable Justine Larbalestier on "whitewashing" in cover art.   And no, really, authors don't have control over what goes on the covers of our books. Unfortunately. Because as Justine says, this is exclusionary and also kind of dumb, and like so much in our industry, smacks of Received And Unquestioned Wisdom that has gone unexamined since the 1930s. It sounds like...

Vicarious Shill

The Adventures in Science Fiction Publishing podcast is back in production, and gregvaneekhout was featured on their first show back , talking about the publication of his first novel, Norse Code. I mention this not only as a public service announcement in a good cause, but in an attempt to win a copy of said novel . Not that I need to, for this very lunchtime, I hit up the Borders for...

Just got back from a really delightful Clarion West Party, and I have realized over the course of a wonderfully social day that I am still thinking--and telling people--about gregvaneekhout 's debut novel Norse Code . I was talking with friends today about something that the book does really well, which is that it gets a peculiar and wonderful aspect of Norse mythology: Einsteinian time. Time...

Workshops days three through six

I was going to catch up on more of the week at the workshop yesterday, but Michael Jackson died and took Farrah Fawcett and most of the internet with him. You live on earth. You know. On Tuesday, Brad Beaulieu made us all eggs benedict with crabmeat for breakfast. This was somewhat suspicious, given that he was first on the critique schedule for the day, but I don't think anyone actually changed our...

The Trilogy Is Complete!

The Demon Redcoat , the third and final volume in the Traitor to the Crown series, is released in bookstores nationwide today! On the history side, it's got John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, British cavalry commander Banastre Tarleton, the famous occultist Countess Cagliostro, the crazy and charismatic Lord Gordon, and King George III. Plus there are major events like the Gordon Riots, where a...

Statement of Intent, 6/10/09

Yesterday: 674 words. Still at the stage where I'm not sure whether this is an actual story or just an exercise in pretentiousness. I suppose we shall see... The China Mieville reading/signing was great. I wish there were pictures of the kirizal - voidmonster - krylyr - gregvaneekhout convergence, but some body used his Jedi Mind Tricks to make us all totally forget...
