The Age likes us!

*Forgot* to mention, The Age review has been transcribed by ‘the publisher’ over on her blog: The busiest short-story writers in Australia are working in speculative fiction, a mixture of dark fantasy, science and other unsettling stuff. They are also some of the best, although largely ignored by the major local publishers. Biancotti has won various awards and been commended in international...

October Australian Speculative Fiction Blog Carnival - first part

Welcome to the October Australian Speculative Fiction Blog Carnival. This one is full of acknowledgements and admissions of interest. Let me start by thanking Nyssa who let me keep it when I stole it from Jason. And Jason, who was very gentlemanly (he hardly swore at all) when he discovered I'd run off with it. Jason will get even next month. This is a big month. Bloggers kept writing lots of interesting...

Teens and terrors: a few highlights late in the week

After spending a day or two scrabbling to find time to read, and then not enjoying what I did read, two very different delights. In the June Asimov's James Patrick Kelly returns with a top piece of young adult SF, "Going Deep". Mariska is a young girl living on the moon in the 22nd century. Just on the verge of adulthood, she's frustrated by all of the things that confront teenagers everywhere...

At which point does it become real?

It’s here. Well, not here. It’s in Perth, but it’s also (hopefully) on its way to Melbourne for launch during the Continuum weekend. It’s A Book of Endings & it looks like this (byo cute puppy). So at 5:15pm on Saturday 15 August, it will (hopefully) be launched at Cabinet , 11 Rainbow Alley, a 3-minute walk from the convention hotel. And many thanks to everyone who helped out with launch...

True love through spite and bitterness

girliejones asked people to describe "how they met their honey" and I decided it was going to take me long enough I might as well do it as a post. Keep in mind I am tired and grumpy, I may decided to write it up better again one day :) So: I'm a rather unromantic, neurotic sort of person. I'm not big on flirting, and overall pretty crap at chatting people up. Luckily circumstances interfered...

Fuck Da Police

I spent a chunk of today listening to old NWA because of a fight in the science fiction community (another one, I hear you say). There's really not a whole lot to say about the debate, except, of course, that I thought the Carl Brandon Petition a bit silly, if for nothing that, yes, of course if you want to have a sane and rational conversation with someone you don't call them the first slur that...
