Bah

So, thanks to drasecretcampus 's useful book about Philip K. Dick, I have now found the answer to why there is only one edition of Cantata-140 in the GoodReads database. It's exactly the same book as The Crack in Space , a copy of which I recently purchased from Alibris . I could have spent that money on a book I don't have. My husband said, "Never mind--you're a completist, and...

SF as a Literary Genre

Well this morning I came across a bunch of posts in various blogs about yesterday's "Science Fiction as a Literary Genre" symposium, which was sponsored by Gresham College in the UK. You can find the event details like speakers and specific lecture topics over on the website (and eventually the full transcripts and maybe even audio will be available). I have to admit, I'd totally forgotten this event...

But I Want to be Alone (with the chocolate)

Gakked from drasecretcampus What Your Taste in Chocolate Says About You You are sweet, mellow, and easily satisfied. You don't like anything too intense and dramatic. Deep down, you're a kid at heart... and you're nostalgic for the past. You are mellow, spiritual, and philosophical. You are a true humanitarian. You enjoy helping people. Your heart can be too open...

Thistles!

Gakked from drasecretcampus Your Score: Eeyore You scored 15 Ego, 17 Anxiety, and 9 Agency! "Do you know what A means, little Piglet?" "No, Eeyore, I don't." "It means Learning, it means Education, it means all the things that you and Pooh haven't got. That's what A means." "Oh," said Piglet again. "I mean, does it?" he explained quickly. "I'm telling...

A more positive Pratchett review

Another review of the upcoming Unofficial Companion to the Novels of Terry Pratchett , that name checks all three of my essays (on Carry-On movies, Neil Gaiman and Douglas Adams ), and is generally a lot more positive than the previous review.

Transport Museum Coventry

Parsley's car , originally uploaded by abrinsky . Visited the Transport Museum in Coventry yesterday with lamentables , korintomichi and drasecretcampus . korintomichi had said it was good even if you don't like 'cars and stuff'. They were right as it was as much about the social history of the city as about transport. ...

Carry-On Reviewing

drasecretcampus editor of the upcoming Unofficial Guide to the Novels of Terry Pratchett , for which I supplied several entries, has just posted a link to the first review (I'm guessing of an early uncorrected proof copy.) The reviewer, Jason Anthony, seems to have taken a particular dislike to the inclusion of my piece on the Carry-On films and their influence on Pratchett. After...

Prolegomena to profound post on RL vs LJ rel'ps

I'll leave the profound post to someone else to write, but in the meantime I've been looking at my friends list, which currently includes 27 different people (not counting myself). And I got to wondering... How many of my LJ friends have I met in real life? Answer: 10 (37%). For this purpose, 'met' is a very flexible term, ranging from a single conversation to lifelong partnership, but words must...

Thanne longen folk to goon on pilgrimages

A Canterbury prologue Pilgrimages are an ancient part of the human experience. We went to Canterbury on Thursday last week, shown around by local lad drasecretcampus ; but the Church of England is exploiting the tourist trade of what is apparently the most touristed town in the UK after London, and charges a hefty £6.50 per head to enter the cathedral close. We took a photograph to prove...
