Echoblog

I have a new awesomely mathy web site! (via 11011110 ) The encyclopedia of integer sequences is awesome . Plouffe's inverter is awesome . The encyclopedia of triangle centers is new and awesome ! Also, I have been reading Knuth, and tried to implement his description of how to generate homogeneous sequences of combinations (Chase's algorithm). I don't know if Knuth tries to be easy for...

Visualizing large graphs

Start with a set of nodes (picture them as dots). Suppose there are n nodes in all (say 3), numbered from 1 to n . Construct an n by n table (if there are 3 nodes, it will look like a blank tic-tac-toe board). Put a 1 in the entry in row i , column j to indicate that there is an edge from node i to node j . (Edges can be pictured as arrows connecting the dots.) The result is called...

Hiring foreign students = espionage

A scientific researcher hired foreign students and gave them access to his plasma physics research without first letting the government clear them, and he brought copies of his research with him on his laptop on a trip to China. His defense: " All the information he presented had already been made public in conferences and published work ."

Knuth is 70

Donald E. Knuth is 70 years old today. There are nice posts about him from Luca Trevisan , Scott Aaronson , and David Eppstein . I’ll add my own piece to the festivities by referring you to my article on the generation of sudoku puzzles for Zoonami’s video game Zendoku . The puzzle generation runs as quickly as it does thanks to Knuth’s “ Dancing Links ” technique for implementing...

Koblitz's autobigraphy

Springer is going to publish Koblitz's autobiography . The guy is quite controversial right now, so it may be a good read. Brief abstract: "These autobiographical memoirs of Neal Koblitz, coinventor of one of the two most popular forms of encryption and digital signature, cover many topics besides his own personal career in mathematics and cryptography - travels to the Soviet Union, Latin America...

Pope warns scientists not to risk fate of Icarus

Via 11011110 , from Reuters . Seems that the catholic church doesn't like the idea of artificial intelligence. He of course has studied all the relevant AI papers of the last 30 years, and found out that perceptron does not have a lot of processing power. Of course, he has missed the fact that multilayer perceptron is a bit more powerful.
