| Body: | I have been debating posting this for a little while. Recently I have been speaking to a lot of old friends as I have been lucky enough to be playing shows in cities like Gainsville and New Port Richey. We have all come up with the same conclusion. The local music Scene is dying, but not quiet dead yet. When I was in School and the beginning of college, a show was something that everyone wanted to go to, if not just to hang out with friends. The current state of local shows is much worse off than I have ever seen it. The problem is our generation is getting older and we are working on Careers and some have Kids. The new generation doesn’t go out much, my guess due to things like Myspace and increasingly cool videogame systems. It is more dangerous to be out now than it was ten years ago, and way more expensive on the Gas. Here is my case… For those of us who did enjoy the local music scenes in the past, try and take time if you can to come out to a show or two. Music will live on regardless, but unfortunately it will soon be only online. Bars that supported local bands are diminishing into nothing all over this state. Trust me, many others and myself have seen this. Try and remember the first couple shows you went to, and how alive it made you feel. Try to remember that when your parents wouldn’t let you date anybody, you could meet those people at a show and have fun for the night somewhere other than your parent’s house. Not joking, this soon will be a memory replaced by chat rooms and Xbox. For those of you who do still go to shows, or play at shows, send out an SOS to friends and family. We can’t let the tradition and purity of a local scene die.
It’s one of the few things not corrupted by huge industries and filtered through assumed social values. It is one of the few places where a creepy looking kid with spikes on his leather jacket would lend a hand to lift a fallen stranger off the pit floors. It’s one of the few places where you can go to have a fun night, and not spend a ton of money. Most importantly, it is a place that can be left behind to the youth of today once they get tired of clicking and want to venture out.
This was a long rant. Anyone who actually agrees and read this, please send me back some feedback… Repost it or whatever you think will help.. |
