I've just been maintaining around here. Watering things when dry and droopy. The tomatoes are kicking as are the squash and zuchinni. The little cucumber close to the greenhouse is finally making a run for it; I now have full confidence that it will actually produce something before the summer is over. Yeah! One of the transplanted cucumbers has died all together and the other is making a go of it. It has a long way to go, but is at least upright and putting out a couple of new leaves. (Right) You can really see a difference in the zucchini plant. It's large and rather exotic looking with young zucchinis looking terrific. I love the way the rubber collars have lifted the squash off the ground. Everything is clean and suspended; hopefully they won't get any bugs like that usually happens from lying on the ground. Yesterday I saw my first bird at the birdbath. Dan says he's seen them there before. I was thrilled!
We've been noticing a killdeer hanging around a small tree in the front yard about 10 feet away from our driveway. I'm starting to wonder if there is a nest around somewhere. We haven't seen 2 birds though, just one. Maybe this is one that hatched from here and came back for a "home" visit.
The mockingbird has a baby in one of the cedars by the shop. The parent is so busy hauling food now. I'm sure our cat is traumatized by now; surely he's been divebombed at some point by now, probably more than once!
The fires in North Carolina have really affected our air quality. Yesterday you could hardly see next door when I awoke. This morning it seemed to have cleared off some during the night, but now I'm smelling it again and looking outside, it's getting that foggy look. We all smell like smoke. The Mayflies have finally arrived! We've seen one or two before, but now they are ready to take you away if you stand still long enough. Smacking yourself in the head (and missing) is no fun! |
