The pictures are up at last!
From my first game of the con. This was a Masque of Red Death (gothic horror in the late nineteenth century). The game started late and was pretty small, but as reported in a previous post, we kicked ass. Here's the group.

One of the best things about GenCon: running into old friends. Here are Sarah, Nick, and Indy from my college sci-fi club.

This "fine" pair is the creative team behind Least I Could Do, one of the greatest webcomics in existence.

One of the best things about GenCon is getting to see all the different costumes people have. I tried costuming for the first time in 06 but this was the first year I really committed to it, with four costumes during the con. My first was my tattooed monk from l5r, an outfit that garnered a lot of attention; when I wasn't in an event I was being stopped about every fifty feet or so for a picture. I ran into Salumon, one of the top Crab players and the third-place winner of the l5r online costume contest (for the record, I got fifth. This makes us the best dressed Crab and best dressed Dragon in the l5r community). We staged a picture and while photographing it, over a dozen people came by to get their pictures of us too.

Of course I had to wander by the CCG hall to see the l5r tourneys. I wasn't playing (no deck, no time) but, in case you haven't figured it out, I am an attention whore, plus I love seeing other people's costumes. Here I am with a Mantis and Phoenix.

Next was the l5r larp. This was put on by Heroes of Rokugan, an ongoing living campaign set in an alternate timeline about five hundred years later. It was my first time doing an HoR event and I have to say I enjoyed it. Here's the entire ensemble.

Crab Clan

Crane Clan

Dragon Clan

Phoenix Clan

Scorpion Clan

Unicorn Clan

Hare Clan

Sparrow Clan

Afterwards, Wynd and I grabbed dinner then headed over to another larp, this one 7th Sea. Unfortunately, most of my pictures didn't come out, but there are a couple.

/>And of course, Wynd and me.

This was where we did our tango.
One of my favorite costumes from the Con. In the two minutes I was near this guy, several people came up not even for pictures but just to ask if they could hug him.

Back to l5r for a minute. These guys weren't in the larp. Rather, they're dressed as Spider Clan and hold the Tao of Fu Leng, acquired in an extremely shady deal.

Later it was the costume contest. Again, most of my pictures didn't come out. Mea culpa.

We did perform our cha cha, though unfortunately the video didn't come out so well. I'm mostly happy with the performance though I need to work on my styling, especially for my Latin walks.

Saturday night was, of course, the GenCon dance. Despite a sticky floor, then no space on the floor, Wynd and I kicked ass. I didn't really make much effort on this costume, after l5r, 7th sea, and Labyrinth but it worked well for dancing. We were some of the best dancers there and had a lot of people complimenting us and even asking for photographs. Wynd says we inspired people and I hope she's right.

Last thing Sunday before leaving I went to the l5r room again to check out the finals for the North American championships. While there, Saluman, the Crab guy from above, was collecting his koku. The shady deal I mentioned with the Spider? They raised 50,000 koku (mail in certificates you exchange for cards and whatnot. Normally you get 1 per booster pack) to buy the Tao of Fu Leng (an evil artifact the Crab had one and were safeguarding) from the Crab. Have you ever wanted to see what 50,000 koku looks like?

And then we drove home. Sadly I did not think to have a picture taken of me with my yearly indulgence: a sack of 20 White Castle burgers.
Good con this year! |
