Snow

Flakes fell, fast and heavy, and quickly coated the ground in a thick, white blanket. She stared out the window, smiling. Even at her adult age, snow always reminded her of her childhood.

By nightfall, the snow had cleared, and moonlight now illuminated everything in its gentle silver glow. She stepped out the backdoor and into several inches of soft, fluffy snow. She exhaled, her breath making smoky circles in the air. She smiled, and went back in to grab her coat.

He knew already what she was doing, and wasted no time in joining her. She loved to walk outside at night, especially after a snowfall. She always said there was something peaceful in the air that you never felt at any other time. And the moonlight just made it feel that much more magical.

They bundled up warm, and walked outside together, hand in hand. They walked in silence; even their footsteps were barely audible under the fluffy snow. The snow clung to everything, every twig on every tree, the phone and electric wires, and the moonlight made everything glitter. She stopped and picked up a handful, and tossed it in the air, watching the tiny flakes sparkle as they fell.

They walked for a bit longer, before turning back and heading inside. They shed their coats, and curled up together in front of the fireplace with cups of tea. She rested her head on his shoulder and just relaxed.

She knew tomorrow the air would warm up just a bit, and the fluffy snow would turn wet and heavy. The children next door would take great joy in the winter wonderland, and soon enough there would be snowmen and forts and snow angels covering their yard. Much like she used to do as a child.

She drifted off to sleep, her head still on his shoulder, smiling and dreaming of her childhood days. Soon he slept too, and while they did, snow began falling softly once again, and the rest of the world hunkered down and slept with them.
