Because I am a total attention whore fond of this particular project, sharing here. Last year, I did a DDS fan soundtrack for the [info]fst community. So, sharing here! All the links should still work. If not, please let me know and I'll fix them?

Digital Devil Saga is an RPG released by Atlus, called Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner in Japan and Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga in the United States. DDS is the story of Serph and his tribe, the Embryon. They are a small but skilled group of warriors, living in a post-apocalyptic world of constant rain and Tribal warfare. The six Tribes obey the Laws of the Karma Temple, fighting each other for the right to ascend to Nirvana. Everything changes for Serph and his companions when a strange light transforms them into cannibalistic demons and leaves a naked, amnesiac girl in their midst.

Digital Devil Saga is a story about humanity, redemption, and hope. With cannibalistic demons, more subtext than you can shake a stick at, and canon hermaphrodites. It also has a powerful, emotional plot driven by a fantastic cast of characters. If you've never had the pleasure of playing this series, I highly recommend it.

This FST is filled with spoilers from beginning to end, so if you want to avoid them, please leave now. Once you click the cuts, there's no turning back.

Rocks Fall, Everyone Dies: A Digital Devil Saga FST

Part 1: The Junkyard

1. Demons: "Mein Teil", Rammstein

"Today I'll meet a man who loves me
Good enough to eat me.
Soft parts and hard ones are on the menu.
Because you are what you eat
And you know what it is."

Digital Devil Saga is probably best known for the fact that it's about Cannibalistic Demons. So have a song about cannibalism. Inspired by the crimes of a German murderer, who found his willing victim online and attempted to share a 'romantic' dinner of the victim's own genitals. The title, 'Mein Teil', literally 'my part' in German, is slang for 'my penis'. Aren't you feeling more educated now?

2. Serph: "I Will Carry You", Clay Aiken

"Everybody cries
Everybody bleeds
No one ever said that life's
An easy thing
That's the beauty of it"

The silent protagonist and leader of the Embryon, Serph rarely shows strong emotion and almost never speaks. Nevertheless, he is a capable and compassionate leader who quickly develops a powerful bond with Sera. There seems little he wouldn't do for his Tribe, placing his own life at risk for their sakes even though his death would mean the end of the Embryon.

3. Sera: "Ai no Melody", Kokia

"The flow of the melody when I met you
Still exist in this shaking time"

Sera is the mysterious girl found at Ground Zero, naked and missing her memories. She can't remember where she came from, but knows that she is there to help the Tribes of the Junkyard. Her song, something the Embryon have never heard before, has the power to calm Demons. The Karma Temple declares that whoever conquers the other Tribes and brings her to them will be granted access to Nirvana. Serph, Argilla, Heat, and Cielo all immediately feel a connection to Sera, though none of them can remember having met before.

4. Heat: "Fight Fire with Fire", Metallica

"Do unto others
As they have done unto you
But what in the hell
Is this world coming to?"

Heat was once Serph's most trusted soldier, but with Sera's arrival he begins to unravel at the seams. Consumed by uncontrolled anger and jealous of Sera's attention towards Serph, he rides the fine line between resentment and outright betrayal. Unlike the others, he readily embraces the new Law and takes pleasure in devouring his enemies. Tragically flawed and overwhelmed by emotions he can't control, Heat is the antihero to Serph's hero.

Originally, I'd wanted a song to focus on his obsession/devotion to Sera. However, eventually the fact that he's a self-proclaimed metalhead won out. There's enough angst present in this FST, so instead have something with plenty of guitars and aggressive lyrics for the most aggressive member of the Embryon.

5. Gale: "Land of Confusion", Genesis

"I remember long ago
When the sun was shining
Yes, and the stars were bright
All through the night
And the sound of your laughter
As I held you tight
So long ago"

The Embryon's strategist, Gale remains a center of calm and logic even as the world around them descends into chaos. He is initially ruthless and efficient, willing to use dishonorable tactics and unable to comprehend the emotional behaviors of his comrades. But the vision of a woman's crying face haunts him, threatening to shatter his carefully maintained sense of Order.

In Lupa, the leader of the Wolves, he finds a kindred spirit and the concept of Honor. When the Embryon are forced to kill Lupa, Gale's grief overwhelms him and forces him to fully awaken at last. With his awakening, Gale fully embraces the notion of Honor and vows to deliver Lupa's dying words to his son.

6. Argilla: "Haunted", Poe

"Come here
No, I won't say please
One more look at the ghost
Before I'm gonna make it leave
Come here
I got the pieces here
Time to gather up the splinters
Build a casket for my tears"

Argilla is the token female in the group, a beautiful Sniper with a scar over her left eye. If you couldn't tell from my icon, she remains my favorite character from the series. Rivaling Heat in her emotional outbursts, Argilla is perhaps defined by her mixture of strength and sorrow. She immediately rejects the notion of devouring others, but is forced to accept the bitter necessity of the act. In the leader of the Maribel, she finds a soulmate, someone who shares her sorrow over what they've become. Jinana's death effects her greatly, leaving a noticeable weight throughout the rest of the story. But even in her grief over lost comrades and the horror of her own condition, Argilla remains unwavering in her courage and devotion to her comrades.

7. Cielo: "Let Forever Be", Chemical Brothers

"And how does it feel like
To wake up in the sun?
And how does it feel like
To shine on everyone?
How does it feel like
To let forever be?
And how does it feel like
To spend a little lifetime
Sitting in the gutter
Screaming symphony"

Cielo seems to be the youngest of the Embryon, possessing a cheerful and energetic personality. He has wild braids and a Jamaican accent, playing the fool to ease tensions among the Tribe. Like the others, he is at first unemotional and blank, merely an obedient soldier. While the others are away, Gale loses control and attempts to devour him. He is rescued when Sera's singing proves to have the power to soothe demons, bringing Gale back to his senses. From then on, he begins to feel indebted to her and swears to protect her. When the Solids raid the base, he is wounded and unable to prevent them from kidnapping Sera. Blaming himself, Cielo awakens and immediately begs for a chance to make amends.

Though imprisoned to prevent him from following, Cielo uses the help of a strange cat to escape. He arrives in time to rescue Sera, becoming a vital part of the Embryon's core members.

8. Harley: "God Help Me", Emilie Autumn

"Don't make me choose
I've got too much to lose"

The Vanguards and the Embryon were locked into a stalemate, their rivalry without any end in sight. That changed when a strange object appeared in the Junkyard, prompting a standoff between members of the two Tribes. In the midst of the battle, a strange light appeared and destroyed the object, leaving chaos and bloodshed in its wake. The Vanguards are slaughtered and devoured, leaving their leader traumatized.

The shortest-lived of the cast, Harley spends most of his time pleading for his life. Unlike the other survivors from Ground Zero, he remembers what happened there and the memory has left him completely broken. When Serph, Heat, and Argilla come looking for answers, he leads them on a chase through the Vanguard's base. Once he's been cornered, Harley loses control and echoes what will soon become the new Law of the Junkyard. Eat or be Eaten. Unfortunately for him, Harley ends up being the Eaten.

9. Jinana: "Your Rain", Mary Elizabeth McGlynn (SH4 OST)

"Out of my head
And I don't know
What I've found
Over and over,
I feel it break me down"

Okay. I admit it. I'm a dork. Initially, I chose Your Rain because it's performed by Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, who is the voice of Jinana in the English version. But once I settled down to really listen to the lyrics and tone, I decided it suited the Maribel's sorrowful leader.

A strong and beautiful warrior, Jinana was the sole female leader among the tribes and the reason for the Maribel's survival. But the woman herself is more complex, quickly revealing a sorrowful and gentle side, developing an almost immediate bond with Argilla. The two women share many traits, including their hatred of devouring. This proves to be Jinana's undoing, as she is unable to control her powers after being brutally beaten by Mick. In the end, the Embryon are left with no choice but to kill her. With the last of her strength, she declares herself Argilla's comrade and dies in the other woman's arms.

10. Bat: "Scenotaph (DJA Infected Remix)", Emanuel

"Spread your legs
And let's fuck the world
This is war! (Yeah)
This town's a virus
And you're a whore
We are War"

Jinana's right-hand man and one of the most feared knife-fighters in the Junkyard, Bat quickly develops into a Thorn in the side of the Embryon. Selfish and petty, his defeat at the hands of the Embryon combined with Jinana's decision to ally with them immediately afterwards drives him to betray his own Tribe to their rivals. Because of his actions, the Maribel suffer terrible losses during a failed attack on the Solids' citadel and his spying results in the kidnapping of Sera shortly thereafter. Partnering with Mick the Slug, leader of the Solids, he clashes repeatedly with the Embryon and plants the idea of betrayal in Heat's mind.

When Mick's scheme collapses, Bat immediately turns on him and attempts to kidnap Sera once more to earn favor with the strongest Tribe in the Junkyard, the Brutes. Cielo's timely arrival foils his plans and leaves Bat wounded, with only one chance left to prove himself to the leader of the Brutes. The Embryon lead him into a trap on board an ancient cruise ship, where he clashes briefly with Argilla and taunts her with having devoured Jinana's body. He manages to overpower her, but the combined strength of the Embryon leaves him wounded and unconscious. Unable to escape the ship before it explodes, Bat's many betrayals finally catch up with him.

11. Lupa: "Knights of Cydonia", Muse

"And how can we win,
when fools can be kings?
Don't waste your time
Or time will waste you"

Lupa was the leader of the second-ranked Tribe, the Wolves. A strong and noble warrior, with a powerful sense of honor, he comes to the Embryon with a proposal alliance. In exchange for the safety of his people, Lupa offers them his head and aid in defeating the remaining Tribe leader -- the strongest and most dangerous of the six original Leaders. He seems to know something about the Junkyard, revealing to them that there are no children in the Junkyard. Even so, he has dreams of a human child calling him 'father' and wishes to tell his son something important.

Eventually, he loses control and, like Jinana before him, must be killed. As he lies dying, Lupa gives Gale a final message to pass along to his son. Lupa's past is among the most significant to the story, having been the original leader of the Lokapala. Greg was killed saving the lives of his friends, though his best friend has never forgiven himself for what happened. This friend, Roland, becomes the new leader of the group and de-facto guardian of Greg's young son, Fred. Receiving the message from his father, Fred goes on to become a leader of mankind and fulfils Lupa's dying request that his son become a man of honor.

12. Varin Omega: "Seven Nation Army", The White Stripes

"I'm gonna fight 'em off
A seven nation army couldn't hold me back
They're gonna rip it off
Taking their time right behind my back
And I'm talking to myself at night
Because I can't forget"

The leader of the most powerful Tribe in the Junkyard, the Brutes, Varin Omega is infamous for his strength and cruelty. Within the Karma Temple, his encounter with Serph causes him to Awaken and immediately, he begins to call himself 'Colonel Beck'. Remembering his true past, Varin begins a full-scale war against his rivals, the Wolves and slaughters most of their number singlehandedly. Consumed with his hatred for Serph, who he believes to be the same as him, Varin confronts the Embryon with the truth. His powers allow him to overwhelm others with Hunger, causing them to go insane. But Sera's own powers allow the Embryon to overcome him, and he dies still cursing them, claiming that Sera is the Devil and will destroy them all.

In truth, Varin Omega is the same as the other residents of the Junkyard, an AI that possesses the Data of a deceased human. His former self was Colonel Terrance E. Beck, the man responsible for the creation of the Junkyard project. When God was driven mad, Colonel Beck was among those slaughtered by the newly-created demon Varna.

13. Angel: "Play Dead", Bjork

"I belong to here
where no one cares and no one loves
No light, no air to live in
A place called Hate
The city of Fear"

Jenna Angel is perhaps one of the most.....unique characters of the story. Born a hermaphrodite, she is the mother /and/ the father of Sera. The second-in-command of the Karma Society, her hatred drove her to attempt to destroy the world. She promised Liberation to her loyal followers, but in the end her own Liberation came from being confronted by the reincarnation of her murdered lover. Unable to accept his words, she killed Gale and was, in turn, killed by him. Finally, in death, she is reunited with her lover and given the peace she never had in life.

Part 2: The Real World

In the real world, the Embryon discover the truth about the Junkyard, Sera, and themselves. The Junkyard was a warfare simulation, used to select the most effective programs for combat enhancement. The Embryon and everyone they knew, were Artificial Intelligences created by a group known as the Karma Society. Together with a resistance group known as the Lokapala, the Embryon set out to rescue Sera from the Society and learn the truth of their own existences.

1. Earth, 2025: "Schwarze Sonne", E Nomine

"I burn without end
Demons spare me
Racing, I fear the eye
The Carnivore, the Cerberus
Are kept here in the Underworld
They burn with hunger for flesh"

Nirvana, it turns out, really kind of sucks. The real world is barren wasteland with ruins and people turned into stone where they stood. What little remains of humanity can be found either underground, in hiding….or living underneath a dome as part of the Karma Society. The Karma Society is turning themselves into demons to survive, which means they need a food source. Good thing there's those unnecessary 'lesser' people living underground.

2. Roland: "Leave Out All The Rest", Linkin Park.

"Don't be afraid
I've taken my beating
I've shared what I made
I'm strong on the surface
Not all the way through
I've never been perfect
But neither have you"

Roland is described early on as 'kind of a loser', having spent the last two years lost in a bottle. He's overwhelmed with guilt over the death of his best friend, drinking to try and escape what seems to be a hopeless situation. His life is quickly turned around by the arrival of the Embryon and he resolves to make up for his past mistakes.

3. The Lokapala: "Contagious", Searchlight

"We're not getting out
So much for getting out
They built up the walls
And left us for ruins"

The Lokapala are a resistance group, fighting a losing battle against the Karma Society. Their original leader's death and Roland's subsequent descent into alcoholism have left the Lokapala in despair, on the defense and losing ground (and people) with every passing day. At first, the humans of the Underground City are suspicious of the Embryon and their demonic nature, but they quickly rally behind them. With Roland's renewed determination and a bold plan of action, they take the fight to the Karma Society. Several follow their leader's example and take the Virus, using their demon powers to fight fire with fire. Most of the group are slaughtered when Indrajit is unleashed, those left to defend the city reduced to almost nothing. By the end of the story, only a single Lokapala soldier is still alive in the Underground City, though badly wounded. This is a song for them, the nameless Normal People that took up the cause and sacrificed themselves for a better future.

4. Serph Sheffield: "Passive", A Perfect Circle

"Wake up and face me,
Don’t play dead cause maybe
Someday I will walk away
And say, “You disappoint me,”
Maybe you’re better off this way"

Where as Serph is a heroic leader, the man he was based on is anything /but/ a handsome prince. Serph Sheffield was our silent hero's exact opposite, a charming and ruthless psychopath willing to do anything to obtain the Power of God. Seducing Nurse Argilla and earning Sera's trust, he uses both women to further his own goals. People, he claims, are just tools. Perhaps the true villain of the story, his manipulations catch up with him when Sera discovers his true nature and God goes mad.

Serph Sheffield is the original Demon, murdering numerous people before he was finally killed. Five years later, his lingering corrupt Data is finally defeated by the combined efforts of Serph and Heat O'Brian, freeing them both from Sheffield.

5. Heat O'Brian: "Points of Authority", Linkin Park

"Forfeit the game, stop the talk show
Product of what you're taught to know
Forfeit the game, because tomorrow
When it's all done, you'll reap what you sow"

The real Heat, Doctor Heat O'Brian, was a temperamental but kind man. He watched as his rival, Serph Sheffield, manipulated and abused Sera for his personal gain. Eventually, he was unable to watch and took action to save his patient, drawing a gun on the other man. But his gamble to rescue Sera ended in disaster, shot in the back by his own subordinate while Sheffield laughed. His death and the revelation of Sheffield's true nature caused the end of the world, as his hated rival got what was coming to him.

Five years later, Heat O'Brian's ghost would help Serph confront his other self and put the monster to rest, allowing both men to finally rest.

6. Nurse Argilla: "#1 Crush", Garbage

"I will lie for you
Beg and steal for you
I will crawl on hands and knees
Until you see
You're just like me"

Sera's beloved Nurse seemed like a sweet, kind young woman. But she never really liked Sera, finding her strange and frightening. She was just doing her job, to be closer to the man she would do anything for. Brainwashed, she was utterly devoted to Serph Sheffield. She spied on her superior, Heat O'Brian and eventually, murdered him to protect Sheffield. Ironically, when he became a demon, she was the first person Serph Sheffield devoured.

Even in death, she continues to make excuses for what she'd done.

7. David: "Our Farewell", Within Temptation

"I can hear you say my name
I can almost see your smile
Feel the warmth of your embrace
But there is nothing but silence now
Around the one I loved
Is this our farewell?"

Once, Angel was not such a bitter and hateful woman. She loved a man named David, another scientist working for the I.E.S.C. But David had developed the Cuvier Syndrome and required hospitalization for his condition. A terrorist bombing at the hospital left him dying in her arms, asking that she forgive the people responsible. His last wishes wouldn't be honored and his soul was reborn in the body of the AI Gale. Strangely enough, he appears separately from his reincarnation when the dead gather on the Sun's surface.

Part 3: Rocks Fall, Everyone Dies

And then everything goes to hell. Heat has betrayed the Embryon, fighting them on behalf of the Karma Society. After he apparently kills Serph, a chain of events repeated five years previously causes God to begin destroying the world. The others have only until sunrise to find a way to save the world, sending them on a desperate and ultimately fatal journey.

Welcome to the final act, perhaps one of the most painful series of events witnessed in a video game to date.

1. Roland: "Man in the Mirror", Savatage

"Give me one second chance
Give me one final dance
Give me one magic line
Take a minute off my time
Give me one final bow
If the moment allows
While he stares at the scars
Saying just who you are"

With the slaughter of his men and his own brutal defeat by a seemingly unstoppable monster, Roland chooses to sacrifice himself to save the others. Still blaming himself for his best friend's death, he prepares to overload the reactor and destroy the Power Plant...and hopefully, Indrajit with it. But before he can finish, the beast arrives and begins to devour him....

2. Argilla: "Who Wants To Live Forever", Queen

"There's no chance for us
It's all decided for us
This world has only one sweet moment
Set aside for us"

While the others flee, Argilla decides to remain behind and help Roland. She arrives to the horrifying sight of her comrade lying in a pool of blood, being devoured by a massive demon. Heedless of her own safety, she attacks the monster and takes a brutal beating. In one final, desperate act, she reaches for the lever that will overload the reactor.....but nearly loses her arm in the effort.

Fatally wounded, Roland manages to crawl onto the control panel and the two share a brief moment. Depending on who you ask, this moment is one of understanding and acceptance or perhaps something romantic in nature. Indrajit then breaks her neck, killing her moments before Roland pulls the lever and destroys the entire complex in a massive explosion.

3. Heat: "Funeral Song", The Rasmus

"I died in my dreams
What's that supposed to mean?
Got lost in the fire
I died in my dreams
Reaching out for your hand
My fatal desire"

Separated from the others, Heat encounters the Karma Society and learns the truth. Overwhelmed by what he's learned and more determined than ever to protect Sera, he turns on his former comrades. In the EGG, he confronts them one final time and charges, impaling Serph on his arm. Together, the two rivals fall into the EGG and are left for dead, as the world begins to end.

Upon their return to the damaged EGG facility, the surviving Embryon discover a horrifying monster waiting for them. Heat had been transformed by God's corrupt data, becoming the massive demon Vitra. Overwhelmed by his emotions, he attacks his former comrades and the girl he loves. Beneath him, Serph confronts the truth and then tears free from Vitra's stomach. Mortally wounded, Heat retreats to the control room for one final confrontation between the rivals where it all began. Reminding Serph that he must protect Sera now and declaring that he has no regrets for the choices he made, Heat dies.

4. Gale: "Sleeping with Ghosts", Placebo

"Hush
It's okay
Dry your eyes
Soulmate dry your eyes
Cause soulmates never die"

Haunted from the very beginning by the vision of a crying woman, Gale has spent the entire story seeking to unravel the mystery of her tears. This woman is Jenna Angel, their enemy and the woman responsible for their misery. As the others continue on their mission to prevent the world's destruction, Gale remains behind to confront Angel. He finally understands the reason for his visions -- the soul of David, Angel's former lover, is a part of him.

David loved her and was content, he tells her. She was meant to carry on his will, but ignored his dying wish. She hated the people responsible for his death, eventually seeking to destroy the world. Unable to accept what she's been told, Angel lashes out and fatally wounds Gale. With the last of his strength, Gale embraces her and delivers a killing blow, giving her peace at last.

5. Cielo: "30k FT", Assemblage 23

"Tell my family and friends
How much I love them all as well
Surely we will meet again
But only time will tell"

With only three survivors, the Embryon begin their flight towards the abandoned HAARP Facility. But several fighter jets pursue them, intending to shoot down Serph and Sera's stolen plane. To save them, Cielo engages the fighters and dies in a final kamikaze strike.

6. Serph: "Love Never Dies - Part 1", Apoptygma Berzerk

"Driven by the power
That is burning in our hearts
You know my faith in you
Will keep us together"

His tribe in ruins, Serph is the only survivor from the Junkyard. The Embyron have sacrificed themselves for him and his most trusted ally has died at his hands. Now, he has only Sera and the promise to remain with her until the end. Even as the HAARP facility burns around them, he refuses to leave her side.

7. Sera: "Love Never Dies - Part 2", Apoptygma Berzerk

"I would rather be
In your arms tonight
Finally to close my eyes
And you to hold me tight"

The Cyber Shaman, raised and experimented on for the sole purpose of communicating with God, Sera is the final hope of mankind. Creating the four core members of the Embryon based on people she had known in her daily life, she took solace in a virtual playground. But her virtual playground was destroyed to make way for the Junkyard and her virtual playmates had to be hidden within that combat simulation to avoid deletion. The man she had trusted and developed feelings for was in truth a monster, using and abusing her for his own goals. The man she had feared was her only protector, sacrificing his own life in a desperate attempt to save her.

Her sorrow brought God's wrath upon the world twice, five years apart. But even as she began to die, unable to survive without the Inhibitor that prevented her accelerated aging, Sera fought alongside the Embryon. Arriving at the abandoned HAARP facility, she attempted to transmit her data to the sun, in hopes of convincing God to spare the world. But the facility overloaded and flames engulfed the building, consuming Sera and Serph and releasing their data from their physical bodies.

(Bonus: After about a five minute pause, the music will start back up in full force. Serph and Sera struggle together to reach the Sun, fighting their way through the chaotic Solar Data. Exit Serph and Sera, enter Seraph. And you thought this game couldn't get any weirder. You were wrong.)

8. Reunion: "Endless Skies", VNV Nation

"You live within the sense
Of the order of things
What is truth
What is important
What defines you"

On the surface of the Sun, the dead reunite for one last battle. Together, the slain Embryon fight towards the core, where God awaits. This is probably the first game I've played where the entire last dungeon involves everyone being dead.

9. Ending - Seraph and Schroedinger: "Still", Alanis Morisette

"I see you averting your glances.
I see you cheering on the war.
I see you ignoring your children,
And I love you still"

Maybe including a track for Seraph and Schroedinger is cheating, since...well...we're not really SURE what they count as. Are they alive? Are they dead? Are they gods? We're not completely certain. Seraph is a being created from the merging of Serph and Sera's thoughts, being a strange mixture of the two made whole. Schroedinger appears throughout the story as a mysterious black cat, watching over the characters and guiding them towards their eventual destiny. He(?) is a sort of Deus ex Machina, finally revealing himself to the Enlightened Seraph as another being identical to He/She. Though they have witnessed all things and understand the foolishness of Mankind, they understand what is truly important and have broken free from the cycle of Rebirth. While the characters are reborn, Seraph and Schroedinger head off into the multiverse to do whatever it is that Enlightened Higher Beings do.

10. Ending - Five years later (Reincarnation): "Dice", Finley Quaye (ft. Beth Orton)

"I was crying over you
I am smiling I think of you
Misty morning and water falls
Breathe in the air if you care, you compare, don't say farewell"

ROCKS FALL. Everyone dies.

Well, not everyone. Fred, the son of Lupa, survives and goes on to lead humanity towards a better future. With him are a group of children, who bear striking resemblance's to the fallen heroes that share their names. These are the Embryon's reincarnations, finally able to live in the Nirvana that they'd been dreaming about. Depending on how you look at it, watching the Embryon sacrifice themselves and return to the cycle, reborn as a happy group of children dressed in their old outfits with the same hairstyles FRED YOU ARE CREEPY .....is sort of bittersweet. But as little Jenna promises, things are going to be alright. Life continues, in one form or another.
