Theres a deliciously funny scene in Definitely, Maybe, when 10 year-old Maya (Abigail Breslin) asks her father Will (Ryan Reynolds) how many girlfriends he had before he met and fell in love with her mother.
Maya wants to know because her parents are getting divorced and shes just had her first sex education lesson at school. The dialogue goes like this:
Will: I had two serious girlfriends and then some other smattering of other women.
Maya: Whats the boy word for ?
Will: They still havent come up with one yet.
The romantic comedy from writer-director Adam Brooks (who wrote Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, French Kiss and the less satisfying Wimbledon) recently had its >world premiere at the Santa Barbara Film Festival; it opens here on Feb 14.
For Maya, Will relives his past as an aspiring politician who moved to New York in 1992 to work on Bill Clintons campaign. He recounts the history of his romantic relationships with three very different women, but he changes their names so Maya has to guess which one he finally married. Is she Wills college sweetheart, the dependable girl-next-door Emily (Elizabeth Banks)? Or his longtime best friend and confidante April (Isla Fisher)? Or the free-spirited, ambitious journalist Summer (Rachel Weisz)?
As Will tells his tale, Maya helps him understand that its definitely never too late to go backand maybe even possible to find a happy ending.
Reynolds, whos 31, found he could identify with a lot of aspects of his character. The 90s were a tumultuous decade for most people, he says. For me it was a time of first loves, going to the big city for the first time, putting yourself out there, and losing innocence that you can never get back.s review described the film as credible, amusing, bittersweet and intelligent a Manhattan-esque exercise for twentysomethings. And it predicted it could be the breakout for Reynolds, who seems on the verge of stardom after roles in Smokin Aces, The Nines, Blade: Trinity and The Amityville Horror.
Last year People mag rated Ryan as No. 3 on its list of the worlds sexiest men- an accolade which doesnt seem to have gone to his head.
The logical question is who is No. 1 on the list, he says. Matt Damon, so the discussion is basically over.
