From a young age, Knöchel wanted to feel loved by both of his parents. His parents had their own problems, however, with a love triangle with Rouge the Bat (who Knuckles eventually married, after getting her pregnant with his child), and their own complicated relationship. Knöchel's creation came at an unfortunate time, a time of dramatic change and strained relationships.

It didn't help that his new step-mother, Rouge the Bat, disliked Knöchel. She felt that Knöchel's presence would detract Knuckles' attention from the couple's own child, so she demanded that Knöchel "spent time with his other father", so Knuckles shipped off his son to Shadow the Hedgehog, who was busy trying to reorganize G.U.N. after the death of it's influential commander.
