One thing you must understand about me: I'm extremely absent-minded sometimes.

Today, for instance, I drove to work instead of riding the bus. Around time for me to go home, I think to myself "fortunately I'm not silly enough to habitually stroll over to the bus stop and ride to the park&ride (which isn't actually the one nearest my home, because that one fills up too early in the morning)." After all, it would be somewhat of a calamity. I might have some trouble over leaving my car downtown overnight, as well as an unwelcome walk all the way home in the cold when I get off the bus and finally figure out what happened.

Around time to go, I finish up some trivial tasks, prepare my backpack, etc. And then I look for my hat. Snaps! It is nowhere to be found! I must have dropped it when walking from the bus to work? Or maybe in the elevator? I would have noticed it missing in the chilly air outside, so I must have lost it inside the building somewhere. I look around a little bit. No good. Well, I'll be fine just this night. And in a way, this bad news is good news, since my beloved hat has become "tainted" when I finally found out what wearing a green hat means in Chinese culture. I remember, when I bought it, my wife said "I don't think you should buy it" and I said "but look, it's warm, inexpensive, what's not to like?" So she said "Fine, if it will make you happy, go ahead and buy it." Perhaps in her mysterious ways, she decided that if she told me up front what a green hat meant, I would have stubbornly refused to let society tell me what color hat to wear, whereas if I discovered on my own at some later date what it signified in China, I would feel all the more embarrassed that I was making a fool of myself all this time, and not repeat the mistake? But hey, I'm a cheapskate, so of course I continue to wear the hat, but yes, this would be the good news aspect to losing the hat. So after 10 minutes searching I give up, and guess what, I have missed the bus. I start planning what to do for the next hour until the next bus comes, and a few minutes in, somehow the idea that I hate riding the bus subconsciously gets me to think "what if I didn't have to?" "Actually, I don't have to." "Oh that's right, I didn't."

Does this qualify as "dumb luck"?
