Ryoma caught up quickly, running, running, running as if the trail would never end. Tezuka knew that for him it probably never would: Ryoma’s potential was limitless and he had to run to keep up to this star, keep close to this pillar, this boy who was always pulling him along.

Side by side they ran, waiting for the next hurdle, the next turn, the next point where the trail got steeper or offered them choices. Tezuka thought this was all they would need.

Yet Ryoma always got faster and with a brush of lips and hands was ahead and still waiting. Catch me, he said, looking back only once to make sure Tezuka was still there, still following.

Tezuka slowed, stopped, watched Ryoma run for a long time and asking himself why – why he had let him go, why he had held him back, why, why, why, why.

He turned and walked back the way they had come together, knowing this was for the best.
