And so Ueda received just what he wanted for his birthday, and so much more. Nothing could ever replace that one day in Ueda’s heart. And certainly nothing would ever take the place of his dear friends who had done so much for him, especially Akanishi. Sure he was baka and very hot-headed, but he was there for him through everything. They made a promise, and they kept it.

            “Tat-chan, Tat-chan, Tat-chan,” Akanishi said disappointed.

            “Why the long face, Akanishi-kun?” Ueda said to him.

            “Too many people call you that. It… To be honest, I don’t want to be like everyone else. Especially in your eyes.”

            “Who are you kidding, Akanishi-kun? You were never like anyone to me. You are Akanishi, my best friend, my precious best friend. How could you ever be like any one else? You won’t ever be like them. You’ll hold that special place in my heart for ever.” He looked Akanishi straight in the eyes. “Even if you call me by the name everyone calls me, you’ll never, ever be like them. Trust me on that.”

            “Okay. I trust you. That promise we made, then.”

            “What about that one?”

            “That’s the trademark of our friendship. We’ll be together, you and me, until the end of time. Through thick and thin, good and bad, anything, everything.”

            Ueda stuck out his pinky to Akanishi. “I’ll be with you?”

            Akanishi stared for a short moment. Then he nodded and stuck out his own pinky. They crossed pinkies. “I’ll be with you. Promise.”
