A/N: This is practically the ending of the story already. How are you faring?

After a long day of shopping, they finally went to dinner. Kame covered Ueda’s eyes while Akanishi took hold of both his hands, guiding him.

“Eh… Where are you bringing me?” Ueda asked.

“It’s a surprise, Ueda-san. You’ll just have to wait!” Taguchi said.

Soon enough, they stopped walking. Ueda heard muffled laughter and whispers from all around him. Akanishi squeezed his hands and Kame took his hands off Ueda’s face.

“Happy Birthday, Ueda Tatsuya-kun!” all the people in the restaurant cheered. Ueda stared in astonishment.

“Cat got your tongue, Tat-chan?” Akanishi asked, laughing.

Ueda turned to him. He began tearing up.

            “Ehh? Why are you crying?!”

Ueda trapped Akanishi in a giant bear hug. “Thank you~!” He turned to every one else in the restaurant, most of them just the staff and other restaurant guests. “Thank you so much!”

They were seated then, in a private room.

“We know how much you like pasta, so we got this room reserved. I hear it’s the best Italian resto around here,” Koki told Ueda.

“That’s so sweet of you guys! Thank you,” Ueda responded.

They stayed in the restaurant for one and a half hours, celebrating dear Tat-chan’s birthday. They didn’t order any beer, they’d have that in Koki and Maru’s hotel room. After Akanishi paid for the meal--“My treat for Tat-chan.”--they got going.

They thanked the restaurant manager and staff once again and went on their way. In the hotel room, everything was already set up. A big banner strewn on the wall, the beds moved aside, a big table for six in the middle of the room, and all the gifts for Ueda behind.

“What’s a celebration without a bit of alcohol, right?” Koki said.

They seated Ueda, the beloved birthday boy, first. Koki brought out the cans of beer from the mini-fridge while Kame and Junno presented Ueda all his birthday gifts.

Ueda jokingly squealed with delight. “Gifts!”

“Open them now or later, Ueda? Your choice,” Kame said.

“May we open them now?” Ueda pleaded like a little boy.

They laughed. “Of course Tat-chan,” Akanishi said.

A personalized photo frame from Taguchi, MP3 speakers from Nakamaru, boxing gloves from Kame, and a gigantic stuffed dog that looked exactly like Ueda’s pet from Koki were the gifts Mister Birthday Boy opened.

Ueda thanked the four over and over for the wonderful presents. They began talking again. He looked over to Akanishi who was seated across him. He tilted his head slightly.

Akanishi knew what Ueda was asking for, what he was wondering about. He subtly raised his hand. Ueda wondered what that meant, but didn’t ask anymore.

It was nearing midnight when they decided to get some sleep. They said good bye and good night to each other, and Kame, Junno, Ueda and Jin left the room. Akanishi had to support Ueda because he was drunk. When Ueda’s arm was slipping down his shoulders, Akanishi grabbed Ueda’s waist to keep him steady.

Ueda-san, this will remind me not to get you drunk anymore,” Akanishi said.

“Hhhhuh? Why…?” Ueda said with eyes closed.

“You’re very heavy. Plus, I think that I’ll have to be responsible for you whenever you get drunk. No more drinking for you, Tat-chan.”

            “Tat-chan…” Ueda whispered.

            “What’s wrong?”

“I like it when you call me that, Jin.”

“Ah. Very well, then. But I won’t call you that very often, so don’t be so sad if I call you Ueda-san instead of Tat-chan.”

Ueda pouted. “Why won’t you call me Tat-chan…?”

“Because…” Akanishi thought of a reason. He had the reason in his heart and his mind, but didn’t dare speak it out. “Just because.”

Akanishi gently put Ueda down on his bed. He turned his back to him and looked at his hiding spot for the gift he got.

            Ueda-san…”

            “What is it?”

“No, nothing. Never mind it. You can wait until tomorrow.”

Ueda eyes snapped open. “My gift?”

            “Yes,” Akanishi admitted.

“But tomorrow won’t be my birthday anymore. May I see it tonight?”

“Fine. If you insist. Now close your eyes again.”

Ueda obeyed and Akanishi retrieved the present. He placed it down on his own bed, right in front of Ueda.

            “Okay, Ueda-san. Here it is.”

Ueda opened his eyes to find a white box before him. It was wide and long, but not too tall. “What is it…?”

            “Open and find out, ne?”

Ueda looked at Akanishi and nodded. He untied the silver satin ribbon and placed it beside him. He looked again at Akanishi, who was now standing beside him. He was too hesitant to open the gift.

            “Akanishi-kun, you open it…”

“But it’s your gift, Ueda-san.” The look in his eyes told Ueda that he wouldn’t open the gift for him.

Ueda breathed in deeply. He took off the cover of the box and--

“Akanishi-kun!” Ueda gasped when he saw what was inside the big box. He was on the brink of crying.

Akanishi sat beside Ueda. “I don’t know why you’re crying… If… you really don’t want the gift, I… can take it back.”

“What? No! You’re not taking this away from me!” Ueda was hysterical already. “This… this is the sweetest present I could ever receive, Akanishi-kun… I’m just so happy that you were the one to give it to me.” He hugged Akanishi, who returned the embrace.

They looked again at the gift. A wooden frame with intricate carvings. Inside it was a poem written by Akanishi, with the background being a photo of Ueda. On the bottom-right corner was a photo of Akanishi, with a dedication written on it: Happy 25th birthday, Ueda-san. I hope you enjoyed your special day. Don’t ever forget, I’ll always be here for you. It’s a promise. Akanishi.

Ueda was now sobbing so hard.

Ueda-san, you won’t be able to read the text if you keep crying like that.”

            “I’m sorry, Akanishi-kun. I’m just so happy.”

“Why don’t you wash your face first. We can read the poem together when you get back.”

Ueda nodded. For three minutes, he stayed in the bath room, washing his face. When he came back, they read the poem, as Akanishi promised.

Dear friend of mine

How long have we known each other?

Maybe not so long

But you're still a big part of me

Dear friend of mine

You hold a special place

In my heart

Did you know that?

Dear friend of mine

Shall I tell you

How wonderful it is

To have you in my life?

Dear friend of mine

Have I done anything

To hurt you

Hurt you so badly?

Dear friend of mine

Please accept my apologies

For all my mistakes

I apologize with all my heart

One and only Ueda Tatsuya

Do you know how much you mean to me?

My world is nothing without you

Oh dear, dear friend of mine.

This did it. Ueda was crying just as hard again. Akanishi rubbed his back, trying to calm him and to stop him from gasping air as he cried. “Ueda-san… You like it?”

Ueda laughed once. “You heard what I said a while ago. It’s the best I’ve ever received. Thank you so much, Akanishi-kun!”

“You’re welcome. Now, come on. Let’s get the frame back into the box. You need to sleep, you’ve been through a long day, haven’t you?”

“You’re right.” They carefully returned the frame back into its big white box. They got ready to sleep and finally closed the lights and lay down.

Akanishi turned towards Ueda; he was looking right back at him. He looked at the digital clock on the bedside table. 11:59.

            Ueda-san.”

            “Akanishi-kun.”

“Happy birthday. And thanks for everything.”

“Thank you to you, too, Akanishi-kun.”

They turned away from each other, looked up at the ceiling, and closed their eyes.

            12:00.
