So, here are the events as I remember them. My report won't be as good at dreamsidhe's account, so feel free to refer to her page as well. We did pretty much spend every minute together, so it is an accurate description of my weekend as well.
My day really started on Friday afternoon. I was working and my boss let me leave at 4pm. I called oneandonlymatt and our friend Eddie answered - he, another friend, Matt and thunder24 were hanging out at a bar and it sounded like a good time was already being had by all. So I hurried down to the North Springs MARTA station and hopped the train. On the train, I was texting dreamsidhe because she was on the train from the airport. She arrived just a few moments before I did. Eddie and his friend had already left, but dreamsidhe was at the bar at the Marriott with oneandonlymatt and thunder24. He was dressed as Comedian from Watchmen. The rest of us did not don our costumes that night. Instead, we got right to drinking and then went up to the room to have a few more drinks before dinner. thunder24 left for a dinner with some other friends (how dare he have other friends!). The rest of us went down to the sports bar, High Velocity, at the Marriott for dinner. We ended up eating at that sports bar three times over the weekend - it was easy, close and good.
After dinner, we went to The Evening at Bree party where Emerald Rose was playing. We enjoyed the first set and dreamsidhe got to meet kingofthewho We spent some time with our friend Susan there as well. We watched the costume contest and then headed off to the Sheraton for the Buffy Horror Picture Show. We met thunder24 for a drink at the bar there (Fandangles) before going to the show. It turned out to be not exactly what I was hoping for, but I do enjoy the episode so we just watched that. At that point, Matt was falling asleep so we headed back to the hotel room and eventually turned in for the night
Saturday we got up and got dressed in our costumes. [Bad username: dreamsidhe"] was Xena, I was dressed as Eowyn and Matt was a Pirate. Xena was super popular for the rest of the con - I don't even think I could count how many photos she stopped for. We went down to watch the parade. We had some lunch and wandered around the dealers and merchants rooms for a while. Eventually we headed back to the room to drop off our stuff. Matt decided he wanted a nap, so dreamsidhe and I went back to the bar to people watch and we had a couple of drinks. Then we met back up with Matt and went over to the Walk of Fame. I wanted to get Peter S. Beagle's autograph and we knew he was on the schedule. I went to stand in line and that is when dreamsidhe had her first encounter with James Callis.
At the Peter S. Beagle table I was introduced to Rebekah Cox, a young lady who was inspired to take up art after reading the last unicorn. This wouldn't be so notable except that she had never done any sort of drawing before and all of her art is done with cheap graphic program and her mouse. Please check out her story and her art at http://www.conlanpress.com/html/rnc_story.html. I was so moved by her art that, though I wasn't planning on purchasing anything at the walk of fame that I found myself needing to buy one. There was a picture of Molly Grue that really spoke to me. I didn't buy that one, but one of the Unicorn and Molly. Though part of me wishes I had bought the one of Molly...or both! Maybe next time. She signed the picture and so did Mr. Beagle. He also signed my copy of the Fantasy Worlds of Peter S. Beagle.
After our Walk of Fame adventure we met thunder24 in line for the Battlestar Galactica panel. He was worried we wouldn't get in, but sure enough we were about half way back in the room. The panel was great. dreamsidhe has a great description of the day. The highlight was Edward James Olmos leading the whole room in a call and response of So Say We All.
After that we took a cab to The Vortex in Little Five Points (in costume, of course) to meet reikimaster for dinner. I wish we had more time to spend hang out with her. After dinner we went to the Colonial Fleet party. That turned out to be lame with just a DJ and no bar. We felt like we were at a school dance. We ended up back at the bar Fandangles and then popped in to the Shindig for a while. That turns out to have been a better party but we just missed Emerald Rose play.
Early Sunday morning, dreamsidhe and I went to dancingwriter's presentation. She read from two fiction projects that she is working on. Both of which were fantastic and something I would certainly read. The rest of the reading was more of a discussion about the art of writing and how to keep the momentum up. It was very energizing and inspiring, actually, especially since both dreamsidhe and I do some writing. Then we went back to the room and dressed up again. After that we went to the Firefly panel which turned out to be hilariously funny. I am glad we went to that one. We met up with lerg after that panel. In fact, we were trying to find him in the dealers room and we were having no luck so thunder24 asked us to describe lerg. Then he went off and came back about 5 minutes later with lerg in tow. They have never met before. We ended up heading up to the Casablanca bar in the Hilton and spent a lot of time and, apparently, way too much money. It was after that bar trip that dreamsidhe had her second James Callis experience.
We went back to the room for a ridiculously silly room party and eventually another friend joined us. We headed back down to High Velocity for dinner. I hit a wall shortly after dinner and left dreamsidhe and her "minions" to continue walking around and taking photos.
On Monday, dreamsidhe headed out to the airport to fly back to Detroit. There she had her 3rd James Callis adventure! Matt and I went to have some lunch then we watched some of the Robot battles, saw some Emerald Rose and then headed to our friend Susan's discussion on "Frodo, the Reluctant Hero". Finally we went back to MARTA and went home. The rest of our Monday was spent like most Mondays - we went out for Sushi and then did our weekly grocery shopping.
The weekend was fantastic. Truthfully, it was one of the best weekends I have had in recent memory. I can't wait for D*C 09. We are even planning some new costumes. We're hooked!
