Though it appears the Bridge and MDHA may have several problems that still exist...this news article interviewed former staff of Path Partners before several changes were implemented and a former guest who felt entitled to demand special privileges from from MDHA staff and the portrayal is not completely sound.
Under Path Partners, several dangerous situations occurred. We were brand new and like children...our policies were tested left and right when the agency was still going through growing pains. The running joke under Path Partners was "what's changed today? and It's a GREAT DAY at the Bridge!" Policies changed from days to days, sometimes hour to hour. It's no wonder guest's were frustrated, yelled and cursed staff out. It seemed like they knew the policies more then the staff did. It is a little tacky of Path Partners to attack MDHA in this manner, even if the situation was poor. Things have changed. Since then, MDHA made it a point to avoid quick changes that affected guests. Everything is conducted in a diplomatic way. Write a proposal for administration, approved, announced and implemented. I have to say it is unfortunate that Michael choose to call the Dallas Morning News to report against even though for two months we allowed Michael to have special privileges to bring his dog, Socks, to the Bridge. Unfortunately, with this privilege, Michael also abused his right to sit with his dog behind secured areas and demanded staff give him and his dog access to storage during closed times. Any requests for Michael to comply with our policies resulted in threats to go to the news.
The Bridge has made great efforts to clear their name of the bad news publicity. Thefts, fights, and verbally theats are common for the homeless population, more specifically people with mental health disorders. I applaud MDHA's efforts and their successes, yet....I believe there is still more work to be done. |
