LS Drabble.
He was staring...
He knew he was - but seeing David reunited with his wife.. it got the young man thinking..
Now, Nin'eveh still scared him to death, but Jonah wondered if one day, he might be as happy to see her as David was now. Could one day, he and his estranged wife sit down and be a couple? Would there ever be a day when they could both set aside their fool-hearty life styles and be a family...
..
Would he run out that family in the end anyway? Like his own father before him?
"Coin for your thoughts?"
He gave a wary smile to Tabo as she sat next to him. She'd forgone her own usual clothes during the casual festivities, and was wearing a shirt that probably belonged to Nayaku....
"just.. thinking..." It was one of those things that no matte how close of a family they'd become over the last year, it was still a matter near and dear to his own heart, and not for sharing.
Luckily, Tabo never liked to pry, and she simply shrugged, pulling the sleeves down to hide her hands, as she regarded the merriment unfolding under the bonfires. "David.. he seems happiest here, don't you think?"
Jonah looked at her queerly, wondering what kind of question that was. OF course he was happier here - this Island was his home. "Maybe I should be asking what *your* thoughts are now, Tabo."
There was that same look of nostalgia on her face that had been on his just before. "Just thinking about Home. How much it's changed since I was there."
Jonah nodded with her. He could understand that. From what he'd gathered from each of the crews personalities, and night terrors, he was probably the closest any of them had to a normal, happy childhood. And even then, there was a hole in all there lives where 'home' was suppose to fill.
"After we get Betta to Toutbleu, and after you 'off' that nav'men officer... are you going to go back to East Isle?"
Tabo sighed, and leaned forward, resting her elbows on her knees, and cradling her chin in her warped hands. "I'd like to.. but like I said.. It's changed so much. I think I'd prefer to remember it as it was, not what it's become..."
He nodded again. "I agree.. Besides, there are people waiting back home that I'm not sure how to deal with yet..."
"What are you're plans then?"
He looked over to where Nayaku was getting ready to disappear with one of the tribegirls. "Master of Romance there has offered to let me stay with him in G'owPor' for a while."
Tabo glanced over, and snorted in disdain. "He'll need someone to cover for him when he breaks the wrong heart..."
Jonah laughed lightly, and shrugged. The Man was only a couple years older then he was - the age gap too close to call their relationship one of a parent-child nature. Jonah as sure if he'd had an older brother, that this was probably how they'd act together. "He'll grow up one day." he joked.
Tabo shook her head in amusement, "It's not nice to belittle your elders..."
"Me? You're the one picking fights with him all the time?"
Tabo, yawned, hiding a chuckle. "He fights with all of us, that's how you know he cares."
Jonah just shook his head, and returned to watching the party.
"Well," Tabo said finally, standing up, "I better take some food to our waterlogged captain.."
Jonah glanced out to the Harbor where their ship was still docked, her Captain still at guard. "Think he'll ever come ashore?"
She paused, mulling the idea over, "One day.. And that's when we'll know this adventure's finally over." She started away, and Jonah looked at her back, wondering the cryptness in her words.
He started back at the dancing natives - his sister tropic tribe. Good and Bad.. Both lay ahead of their tiny crew. Both fighting for the most impact of the four YumeMada.
Finally Jonah grinned, his usual, shit-eating, no-care-in-the-world, grin and got up to dance like a lunatic under the bonfire's flicker and the moon light's smile.
